A friend of mine just reinstalled Battlefield, and we're trying to get him up and running. The game crashes to desktop during map load every time. I've checked all the EA tech support forums, and he's done everything they suggested. Anyone got any ideas beyond these:

* Updated video and audio drivers - done, running a MSI Geforce 4 4400
* Updated to directX 9.1 - done
* Turned off antivirus - doesn't have one
* Not using No-CD hack - hadn't
* Patched to 1.4 - done
* Not using CD-RW for the play CD - not

He's running Windows 2000. Plenty of RAM, hard drive space, exceeds all the system recommendations.

The map load screen comes up, the bar fills beyond half-way, then crashes to desktop. At this point, it is a clean install of the game and the 1.4 patch only. No mods. All default directories.

The only thing I can think of that we haven't tried would be the AllowAllRefreshRates change, but I don't see how that would be the problem.

I had some problems with the refresh rates and crashing a while back, too. I assume it is crashing both active and inactive? Try it both ways.

Also, I would try to clean the registry. Try REGCLEAN from Microsoft. Could be an old entry screwing with something.

Good to see you on the forums, Pal. We enjoy your company in-game. :)

Anyone got any ideas beyond these:The only "crash to desktop" problem that I can confirm is when connecting to servers that are running Midway or Market Gardens. There are problems with both of those maps that cause the desktop crash.

I thought the problem was with my client as well the first couple of times I tried to connect to servers. FYI: The GA server is not running either of these maps. :( really, Market Gardens is a very cool map.
