When I got in today I was told that Half-Life2's source code has been leaked so I went to a Half-life2 site to check this out and was stunned to see how many people were logged on to the site.
2,203 users :D

You know I did suggest that gamingAsylum should focus on a few core games as star attractions to rake in the masses :D

Straight from Gabe:

Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve.

Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

This is very, very bad.
I guarantee the hackers ALREADY have this code and are preparing the cheats right now. And, these cheats will be virtually undetectable.

Anybody want to start a International Anti-Hacker Brute squad? We could have chapters in every part of the world. When the hacker is identified, a few of our members would wait outside his house one night with bad intentions.........

Anyway.. stolen (not leaked) source codes sux ass. BUT.. maybe Valve will now be forced to impliment MD5 checksum on the server software. Something all online games should do anyway.. or something very, very similar at the very least.

I'm willing to bet that this will delay the game further. Valve now needs to go through the source code to determine anything was changed or added. If the bad guys got that far into their network, they could have easily inserted backdoors.

Cheers,

I think you've got to have balls to do this to someone like Gabe Newell. Although he's probably a softer target than, say, Carmack. I think if Carmack found you were tinkering with his machine remotely he'd go absolutely mediaeval on you with his code skillz - like every time you go online your email account sends death threats to the FBI or summit heheh.

Does this mean Valve is looking for a new network admin?

Probably was done at night

In other gaming news..... Stealth Software anounced it's new game today: Partial-Life. Live through the eyes of Jordan Beeman as he battles his way through Town B to uncover the mystery of the aliens and government conspiracies. The fully DX9 compatible engine will dazzle you with it's complexity and beauty. A multiplayer version of the game "Counter-Assault" will be included with the single player version.

Latest update on gamespy ........................Unleash the Hounds.............:Valve Confirms Half-Life 2 Code Exposure. - Rhoam
Managing Director Gabe Newell of Valve Software confirmed on Halflife2.net that the source code for one of the most anticipated titles in recent history, Half-Life 2, has been stolen and posted on the internet.

According to Newell, the company has been the victim of a concerted attack by infiltrators using denial of service attacks and keystroke recorders to penetrate the network and copy the source tree for Half-Life 2.

"What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great.”
”We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.”

Gamespy will continue to report any developments on this issue as more information becomes available.

They want the community to find these guys?

So they end up with a big list of names of possible hackers, that most Companies would pay to get a hold of?

Their plea sounds like a call for help, but it could turn into a witchhunt for many who are more than computer savvy..imo.

You say that like you know something we don't...

FESS UP!! :p

That Half-Life2 site had over 3000 people logged on at one time and apparently it looks like it may have crashed because it could not handle the load or something :D

Anyway this could be the most unfortunate gaming disaster ever, depending on how much of the secrets to Valve's Engine have been compromised and in the hands of their competitors and hackers. Clearly their engine would be in the top 3 most advanced engines out in the next several months. Looks like their STEAM system may have been compromised as well. I think they may have tricked the hackers into revealing themselves to some extent and we were all unknowingly witness to this trick but I don't know if its wise to say anything about that right now. :) . I bet Nvidia is revengefully laughing though. If another big company or an insider is behind this scandal, they probably just anonymously leaked enough info for competent hackers to carry out the attack.

Here is what Gabe Newell founder of Valve Software had to say:

1) We've taken our network connection down to pretty much a minimum. We're still finding machines internally that have been compromised.

2) The suite of tools that the attacker was using included the modified version of RemotelyAnywhere (basically a Remote Desktop-style remote admin tool), Haxker Defender (a process, registry key and file hiding tool), the key logger, and various networking utilities that allowed them to transfer files (compressors, NetCat, and FTP). We also are pretty sure they were sniffing our network to gather passwords and other information. Haxker Defender includes a file system driver that allows an attacker to have stuff on your machine that is invisible, unless you do something like mount the drive under another OS that has NTFS support.

We have determined one way of detecting some infected machines, which is using a connection viewer to detect connections to anomalous hosts external to our network.

We still don't know their entry method.

3) In general, the community has been remarkably swift at tracking down the sources of the leak. What would be most helpful now are IP addresses of the people who were responsible for the intrusion or for the denial of service attacks.

4) Also, please continue to send in URLs of websites hosting the source code. We've been contacting people and asking them to take it down.

5) There's anecdotal evidence that other game developers have been targeted by whoever attacked us. This hasn't been confirmed. We've been providing other game developers with more detailed information about the exploits and evidence of infiltration.

6) We're running a little bit blind with our network shut down, but it seems like some of the press has picked up the story. I've been fielding calls from the mainstream non-games, non-technical press.all day. Hopefully they will get to report shortly what a mistake it is to piss off a whole bunch of gamers and get them hunting you around the Internet.

For any information related to this, please send it to helpvalve@valvesoftware.com, or you can always send to gaben@valvesoftware.com as well.

Quick warning: Don't bother glancing at the code or any assets that were released on the net because there are some pretty big spoilers if you do and if you are good at piecing things together. You don't even need to be able to read code. I was unfortunate to have been shown some things and I can already predict a fair portion of the game.

Half-Life2 is in deep doodoo and I think they should redo a huge amount of the game, not just the coding. I hope other games don't copy them before Half-Life2 is even out the door...Poor Valve

Heres the latest "bad" news >> ALERT: FiringSquad News Briefs!

* Half-Life 2 beta leaked
It seems that the headaches continue for Valve Software as a beta of Half-Life 2 has been leaked out onto the net. While the source code leak is a massive blow to the developers because of security and cheating implications, it's relatively useless to the average gamer. The recent beta leak today contains actual playable material, which, I suppose, is still a massive blow to Valve. CNN:

When hackers broke into the computing system of Valve Software, they stole more than just the source code to Half-Life 2. They also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build.

Message boards and chat rooms were buzzing Tuesday morning with word of the leaked game. Some fan-based and hacker sites were even displaying in-game images. It is unclear whether the leaked version features the entire game or a limited number of levels. Also unclear is how current the assets used to create the game are.

Half-Life 2 has become the biggest 'celebrity' game of 2003, and like any celebrity, it has become a target for attention, some of which obviously very negative.

"Anonymous Leaker" Speaks

10/8/2003 10:09 PST | Half-Life 2 | by Fragmaster

I'm not sure if it's really a great idea to post this, but "Anonymous Leaker" -- the guy who is apparently responsible for releasing the slightly playable pre-Alphaish version of HL2 which is unfortunately in circulation -- has released a statement of sorts. Here's a snip:

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to understand it wasnt finished yet.
Also I'd like to point out the E3 [demo] was one big fake by Valve. Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

Yikes. WARNING, BRIEF EDITORIALIZING AHEAD!
I'm not going to sit here and say I completely agree with Valve's policies, because I've criticized them in the past regarding how they handled the original release date delay announcement, among other things. And judging by what this guy says about the status of the game, professional game developer's analysis of the leaked source code, and what I personally know about Half-Life 2's current development status, it does seem pretty clear that the game isn't really that close to being done and hasn't even reached solid Beta status.

If this assessment is true, that would contradict a whole bunch of things Valve has said in the past, and make their behavior regarding the whole 9/30 release date drama even more questionable.

Man, I seriously hope Valve set this thing up to catch Hackers and that what he downloaded was the Proof Of Concept stuff from last year :D
