I've been following this as part of an enterprise project I'm scheming. It may come to nothing but it is Google... and could be THE browser in a few years.
Firefox has more worries than IE about this, IMO. People are quite loyal to their browsers (witness the decent percentage still using Netscape). Google is THE chief funder behind Firefox (by occupying their search space contractually through 2011 I believe). This new browser seems to do much and more that will feel very familiar to Firefox users. If successful, it will be another case where "fast follower" wins rather than being first to market.
Here's the explanation via McCloud comic: http://books.google.com/books?id=8UsqHohwwVYC&printsec=frontcover#PPA1,M1
