I have never owned a console before, but the PS3 is looking more and more attractive to me. Does anyone know how online play works? Does it just require you to have a broadband connection or do you need to pay for some sort of PS3 service too?
The reason I was asking is because I see Call of Duty 4 is for PS3 (just one of the games im interested in). Can you just jump onto any server like you can on the PC version? Can PS3 Players play online with PC players on the same server?

You can play against other PS3 players with a internet connection (no special fee) but it seems they took away the PC & PS3 playing abliity as it has flaws according to my Son in Law.
We thought we'd be able to play UT3 once they moved.. guess not.

Thanks sobe. I heard the internet play is free but something about having to pay to download content for games that you want to play online with? Is this always the case or just for certain games?

Well, when you meet new players, be sure to ASL, and then you can decide who to play with from there.
online play is completely free, no fees. It's not required to specific games either. One requirement Sony makes of it's third party developers that plan to use multiplayer over the PlayStation network is that they are free of charge. The only game that MIGHT cost a fee is the upcoming PS3-only MMORPG 'The Agency'.
The only thing you have to pay for is bonus content, if there is any. Patches and such are absolutely free, and occasionally companies will release free bonus content, but generally, any content that can qualify as expansion packs will cost something like $9.99 to download. For instance, I have Guitar Hero 3 and a few weeks ago they release a 'Foo Fighters' song pack that I downloaded for $4.99. Last week I started up Assassin's Creed and was notified that a patch needed to be downloaded. It was all automatic and completely free. So in essence, it's like the PC: Chances are if it would qualify to be sold for a charge on the PC, it's gonna cost you on the PS3 too. The content is VERY fairly priced. There are multiplayer map packs sold for games like Resistance: Fall of Man for $2.99, bonus cars and maps for games like Motorstorm for $0.99. You don't get the feeling like you're being gouged if you decide to buy anything.
I'm still trying to decide on whether to get UT3 for the PS3 or PC. The cool thing about the PS3 version is that you can download PC created content onto a flash drive and copy it over for use on your PS3.
But CoD? Orange Box? Totally free to play online.
But yeah...free online is a major reason I bought a PS3. I just don't understand the logic behind Microsoft charging over $100.00 a year just to be able to play multiplayer. You're doing THEM a favor by buying the console and games, yet they still want you to pay to play the multiplayer aspect of the games you purchased. Suckers.
