View Full Version : SATA and copy protection trouble

I just installed a SATA hard drive in my computer Monday. I am able to install the OS and software fine, provided the software doesn't have on-disc copy protection. If it has on disc copy protection, it craps out mid-installation with an error saying something to the effect of "the file you copied to C: does not match the original D:" and it quits.
XP Home installed fine
Office XP installed fine
Frontpage 2000 installed fine
Quicken 2000 installed fine
GTA3: Vice City installed fine (I don't think there's copy protection on the install disc, just the play disc)
Battlefield 1942 failed (but installed fine when the CD was put in the drive on another computer and installed across the LAN)
Unreal Tournament 2003 failed
Anyone else tried out SATA drives and had a problem (or didn't have a problem)?
I've tried moving the CD drives to the other IDE slot and moving the SATA controller to another PCI slot. Neither seemed to do any good.
Mobo: Abit SR7-8X
SATA Adapter: Adaptec SATAConnect
SATA Drive: Maxtor 120GB
Memory: 2xKingston 512MB PC2700
Video: Gainward GeForceFX 4200 AGP w/ 64MB
CD1: Creative Labs DVD 12x
CD2: Iomega ZipCD 4x (CDRW)
Haven't even played with SATA yet Pal, sorry. :(

Oh... I see.. it's your GeForce FX 4200 :p
j/k.. no idea
I don't see why SATA would have any affect on the problem.

Me either. I did get an error message when I tried to install Paint Shop Pro, with MSIInstaller. I turned on Installer logging and tried to install Homeworld 2, but there wasn't any detail there...just what showed on screen. "File could not be found. Media may be corrupt." in this case.

That's a strange problem.
Maybe your disks are dirty or the drives gonna crap out.
(Just some thoughts)
I haven't messed around with SATA or alot of newer Hardware for that fact.
But I think we all try our damnedest here.
I"m running an SATA and an EIDE drive together in a raid 0 configuration right now and haven't encountered any of the problems you've mentioned, or any weird problems at all for that matter. The only difference I did notice was the drastic drop in read performance switching to the raid 0 configuration. Other than that, seems normal here.
From what you're saying, it sounds like Windows have the pointers to the drive lettering all screwed up. This may be obvious, but do you have the latest drivers for your SATA controllers as well as BIOS for your MOBO? Assuming everything is up-to-date, you may consider checking your BIOS settings.

Wait... so.. Play, you put drives on different busses in Raid 0.. and noticed a drop in perfomance?
Amazing! :moon:

No dork, that would have happenned irregardless of whether or not they were bothe EIDE, SATA, or one of each. It's just the nature of RAID 0. Reads are slower, but writes are faster. BTW, they are both on the same IO controller and the only difference is one is using an SATA chip to translate the signal and the other is using standard EIDE. Technically, they're still on the same bus. GG detective Creeper. :p :D

Drive letter pointers are fine. The installation starts fine, it just dies mid-stream.

Ok, after much nashing of teeth, I finally got Homeworld 2 and Adobe Acrobat to install. I had to set the drives to PIO mode (vs DMA mode, which really points to a DMA problem) in the IDE controller settings. This was, of course, EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE MICROSOFT TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE:

... irregardless ...
GG detective Creeper. :p :D
And to you, English Proffessor Play
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=irregardless
"Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so."
(Also for the record, others might dissagree with your impressions of the nature of RAID 0 and read speeds. You might try checking your stripe size, or this anadtech article.. sure, it's from june of 2001, but here's the link anyway: http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.html?i=1491&p=2 )
Really childish, Creeper. No need. Thank you. Play.
