Well, it does not suck...

I have played it but a few hours, maybe 3, and so far I think it is a very cool concept. I have had to work through a few bugs, most irritating was having to turn off all forms of dynamic lighting to get the game to run without bogging down to a crawl. Other than that, it installed fine, and there is a patch out already that installed cleanly. I should note that the patch would have eliminated any save games, which would have sucked if I had been playing it for a bit. I can only hope that future patches will not do this.
Very interesting concept... you wake up after surviving a "death truck" accident, and start taking mission assignments from various NPCs. There is a main storyline, which pretty much involves you trying to figure out who you are and what you were doing there in the first place (did I mention the amnesia?). As you work on these missions, you meet up with others that will have you perform various side missions.
You start out with minimal weapons and armor, and are able to purchase better stuff as you aquire items and cash to trade. The zones are quite large, I am only in the first one, and have been impressed with the size of it.
Graphics, while dated, are decent... no real eye popping stuff, but still pretty good. I will say it looked much better when I did have the dynamic lighting on, but my system could not handle it.
The human enemy A.I. is quite impressive. They do not do the "charge in" approach, but seek cover, run between cover, and even try to flank you. I have found the few missions I have done so far very challenging.
The game is incredibly immersive. The ambient sound effects are outstanding, some of the best I have seen (heard?). Yips and growls from packs of wild dogs and mutated creatures off in the distance keep you on your toes, and there is the occasional sound of gunfights, helicopters, roaming military patrols, etc. It is not necessarily a scary game, but there is a certain tension I feel while playing, hearing all of these sounds around me. Probably the biggest frustration I have experienced so far is that the game is so damn immersive, I seldom remember to save my game.
While I have just started, andI have not been exposed to much other that a handgun and a shotgun, the weapon physics in the game are pretty cool. You will not kill (or even hit) an enemy from a distance with the handgun. Also, aiming at legs, arms, etc. will end up with you dead. You have to go for a spot (such as the head) that would cause a fatal blow in real life if you want to defeat the enemy. So, sucks to start out, as the hadngun is pretty much worthless against most of the stuff. You can dart in and out of cover, taking pot shots at them, but you need to be close to get an accurate shot off. And, if you fight from one spot for too long, their buddies will try to work their way behind you and finish it. You do get to fight with allies, and can loot dead bodies for weapons, ammo, and other useful items.
Now, for the bad. The game is kinda buggy, particularly with some of the creature AI. Most of the time it works pretty cool. For instance, when a pack of dogs comes close, you can pop off one or two of them, and the others will high tail it. But sometimes, you will come across one running around in circles or standing still. I have noticed this less with the humans in the game. Also, the communication system is text based, and a bit tedious. But, not sure how else they could have done it, given that you have choices to make during these "discussions".
All in all, pretty decent. For the time they put into it, the game should be a little less hardware intensive, but it is not terrible. I will report more as I play it more, but I am not dissapointed at this point. The immersion factor alone is worth the 40 bucks. Lets see if it has some staying power...

Ok, have played quite a bit more. The game is pretty cool, although there are some obvious bugs. The "Zone" is friggin huge, and the areas are very well done. Had to do one part where I went through some underground pipe areas, which were dark and confined, but most areas have been outside. There have been some missions that took me into buildings, which were also somewhat dark.
Still impressed with the overall immersion and the A.I., the soldiers are definitely not push overs. The game has been quite challenging.
One of the annoying bugs is that sometimes a new mission will come up, and it scrolls by very quickly. As far as I can see, there is no way to go back and see all the details and storyline involved with the missions; you do have a PDA that keeps track of the missions in summary format. So, some things flash by and I am really not sure exactly what I am supposed to do. This has happened on about three of the 15 or so missions I have picked up, so it is not terrible, but still an annoyance.
The storyline is not overly impressive, but still keeps me interested. I find myself wanting to play the game more and more, just to keep progressing. THe side missions are pretty cool, and I just got to the "Bar", deep in the zone, and am starting to see the two factions that are present. Also, there is some kind of Arena where I can go and fight to earn more money. Have not done it yet, so not sure what it is all about.
I am getting used to saving often, which helps quite a bit, because you never know if you are going to run into a military patrol or a pack of mutants. In this game, you are not Superman, a couple quick shots can drop you. I have started to instinctly stay near trees and other cover in case I am fired upon.
If you are not hurting for cash, this is a pretty good game to get. I cannot honestly say it is a "must have", but it is alot of fun, and a bit different from the run of the mill FPS games. I have spent several hours playing it now, and do not think I am close to finishing. Also, there were several side missions that I did not do. All in all, I think I got my moneys worth... wish it was more polished, but has still been very fun, and the bugs have not been game stoppers, just kinda annoying.
Will report more...

Is there going to be a demo? I'd like to see how it runs on my system before I buy it.

If you have an Nvidia card, try the 94.20 (beta) drivers. In trying to determine why my 7800GS was bogging down with the dynamic lighting I saw these drivers recommended. They took me from an unplayable walk-away-and-get-a-cup-of-coffee-while-the-lightning-finishes-flashing jerkiness towards a fairly smooth experience with intermittent quick hiccups. But the consensus in what I've been reading is that some of the fancier shader effects were slapped in last minute (and unfortunately without enough optimization) so that the once-revolutionary engine would still seem contemporary. Here's to hoping that their next patch starts working on performance issues.

I'm only a couple hours in but am enjoying it and, as Stealth said, crave more. At the same time, I get overwhelmed by huge games like this, which is why I'm about two Oblivion gates done with Oblivion and haven't touched it in months. STALKER's huge but guides you in a direction and has plenty of missions for you to run. One thing I noticed is that missions have expiration dates. I haven't let one lapse yet, so I don't know what they are--if you can actually lose a chance at a mission.

You don't get much guidance when you start the game. I don't know if I ever sleep or how much energy I get from different kinds of food (you get hungry). I killed myself once when I stuck a bunch of radioactive artifacts in my belt, saw my radiation start to go up, removed them, and then slowly died as the radiation effect wore off verrrry slowly. The environment is very dangerous--anomalies, animals, mines, bandits...all have killed me at least once. The immersion is excellent though. On one mission I descended off of some railroad tracks into the woods and it was so dark and hazy I was on the edge of my seat, expecting some mutated creature to start chasing me...into an anomaly. There are so many things to look out for.

The AI does have it's embarassing moments. I was able to walk up next to dogs a few times without them noticing. I wasn't creeping or being stealthy... Sometimes I see them turn in place (on their axis), which looks kind of silly on a long animal. But at the same time, it's something to see a pack of dogs and boars just a ways off the road atop a small hill under the moonlight, circling and then running off. They're sneaky, so even after they'd run off I wasn't sure they weren't trying to come up at me through a gulley or something.

I picked my copy up from Circuit City last week for $30. Best Buy had it for $35. It's been worth it.

Using this Tweak Guide (http://www.tweakguides.com/STALKER_1.html), I was able to get the game working well with full dynamic lighting. Looks much, much better.
