Is the Game Console killing the PC game industry? Is PC gaming already dead?
Call of Duty 3 didn't make it to the PC market. Last year many of the new PC titles had strict system requirements, 1.7+ Ghz CPU and Directx 9.0c compatible vid card. In some cases, like Battlefield 2, a very small set of vid cards could play the game. There were many complaints, emails, support calls and unhappy customers. There are very few PCs out there that are identical and this always adds to more odd problems running games, sound card EAX problems, controller problems, etc. This wide variation is a nightmare for customer support. And now that MicroSoft Vista is on the horizon these other problems mays seem small in comparison. I'm sure you'll be seeing Vista in the system requirements for fall 2007 for PC games or maybe even Vista sp1 :p or sp2. Next year won't be pretty for PC gaming.
Microsoft tried to prove (starting in 2005) that Vista is a gaming platform. Their advanced multimedia capabilities will probably rule out any backwards compatibility with XP (i.e. Vista required). Some how I think they will do just the opposite and drive people towards consoles.
