"Unable to browse the network

The network is not present or not started."

I got this msg while I was working...till then all things
went right and from that moment, the Network Neighborhood
just disapeared...I cannot access the LAN anymore...I can
ping all the computers but cannot access them...what would
be the problem? Anyone knows such a thing? I tryed to
reinstal my protocolls, I even reinstalled the Network
adapter and still doesn't works! I've searched the web and
Microsoft support, but didn't got any result!

btw, I have win XP Pro!

HELP!!!

If you can ping the servers but not access them, chances are there is a problem with DNS or a Windows protocol.

Check and make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is installed. Check and make sure DNS is enabled. Make sure the domain/workgroup of all computers is the same.

yep, this is what I had in mind, but checked all and rechecked...all things are fine but still not working...
I've reinstale all the protocols, clients and chacked the DNS...all of them are good...but the main problem is that the msg appeared while I was working and was connected to a computer from the domain...just like that...and now is down...I can navigate on the internet without problems, I can ping all the computers, but the rest is down!

What he said. Check your Event Viewer and see if there are any Browser elections being forced, if another machine is grabbing the Browser Master from the XP machine, or if the Browser service is failing. Also look for any errors pertaining to the following services: Workstation, DNS Client, DHCP client, TCP/IP Netbios Helper, and Server.

I assume you've rebooted the PC and router. Can you give some information on the network?

Is there a switch/router? If so, what model.

Are the PC's on a domain or a workgroup? Do you have the domain/workgroup set to be the same on all PCs? If this is a home network, I'd say make them all a workgroup. If it is a domain, make sure the XP Pro machine logon is set to log on to the domain rather than local PC (when you first boot and Ctrl-Alt-Del to get the username and password, there should be a box for domain name if you are using a domain...if you don't see it, there should be a 'more settings' button or something similar on the username/password box).

In the network adapter's configuration, make sure the XP machine isn't set to be the Browser Master (this is the #1 thing to check...on all the networked PC's...make sure it's set to Yes on only 1 machine...it can be the XP machine without a problem, just make sure there is only one on the network). If the PC's can see each other by IP but not name, this is probably the source of the problem assuming you don't have a service failing.

In the network adapter's TCP settings, make sure you haven't turned on Internet Firewall and that you have it set to NetBIOS names all the time (rather than relying on usage being detected).

You replied while I was typing.

So it IS a domain and it happened during use rather than at bootup.

Ok, diffenently check the Event Viewer for a Browser election...95% sure there will be one....someone on another PC with Browser Master set to true probably booted/logged on after you.
