I just bought Medieval: Total War, and it's a worthy successor to Shogun: Total War. They are the most interesting and intelligent RTS's I've ever played. They offer, IMO, a lot more variety than the traditional RTS's, and have a much more compelling and varied game experience. They also have much more compelling and realistic historical flavor than any of the other historically-based RTS's I've played, which were basically Command and Conquer in pseudo-historical drag (I'm optimistic about Blitzkrieg based on the demo, however, anyone played it?)

Only downsides for me are that MTO is a little more than my system can handle on some maps, and that the strategic portion of the game can't be played against human opponents.

I'm a HUGE *Total War* fan Stranger. Been playing it since it came out.

I was a bit disappointed with the Viking expansion, but the main game IMO remains arguably the best PC strategy game of all time.

Looking forward to Rome: Total War for sure. :) Total War in complete 3D!

Too bad about the Viking expansion (I'll probably get it anyway, just to seee), the Mongol Expansion to Shogun TW wasn't so amazing either. The Rome expansion looks to be amazing. I will definitely need to get new hardware for that.

Rome is a standalone game. :) They created an entirely new 3D engine for it.

One of the major differences is the basis of the game. Instead of playing different 'countries' such as in Medieval, you play a faction within the Roman Empire. You need to balance dealing with enemies, other Roman factions, and the Senate to rise to power and become the Emperor of Rome. Battles, Politics, and a living world (cities grow or shrink depending on how you govern them). Pretty neat. :) There are also other non-Roman factions like the Cathaginians, barbarians, and Egyptians. You can also play as or against famous Roman figures such as Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and Spartacus.

Here's a brief FAQ:

Ooooh, sounds awesome! I've always been a big fan of RTS and this game, especially the Roman one, sounds awesome. Ugh, first SCII now this. I think my pocket book is getting a little thin. :D
