Anybody have any tried and proven homemade remedies for the flu? I don't have it....yet, but my wife, her cousin, and even my puppy has it bad. I've got some Tylenol/Advil to bring down the fever, chicken noodle soup to ease their digestion, and lots of good ole fashion OJ for their immune system. Am I missing anything else?

Needless to say, yesterday was hell. It seems like they each came stumbling in the door yesterday holding their stomach, shivering, then passing out. Even my poor pup was yacking up a storm and making hershey squirts. :(

Thank gawd my wife doesn't read these forumsbut there was a moment yesterday when both my wife and the pup was heaving, I actually had to stop and think about who I should help first. Good thing my wife knew where the toilet was. :p

Thera-Flu is the closest thing we have to a cure for the flu. Get some! :) It's a powdered mixture you add with hot water. Add plenty of sugar because it tastes nasty, but I can guarantee you will feel 100% better the next day.

Never thought of adding sugar. :bash:

Thanks all for the reply.

Bender, when you say Herb are you talking about spices, or are you takling about the "herb", as in ganja, mota, mary jane, etc? If the latter, I'm sure if they smoke enough of it, they wouldn't care much about being sick.

EH, JD?

F7, I've tried Thera-Flu before and I don't know what's worse? Coming down with the flu or having to drink that nasty thing. I wonder what are the medicimal ingredients in it that help relieve the symptoms?

Not sure, but when I was living in Texas, the local supermarket 'Albertsons' sold their own version of Thera-Flu which worked just as well, and tasted so good it didn't need any sweetener. Maybe your local supermarket has their own version?

Also, make sure you get the right kind. They have ones for Cough/Nasal, others for Flu/Headache, etc.

Citrus like orange juice, lemonade can irritate the stomach.
Cranberry juice has lots if Vitamin C too if you like it.

Some fever is good as it helps the body make what you need to get better.
If the chicken soup is more than 1 time a day they will get enough salt then (unless its sodium free?) if not with all the sweating (fever) they need to have a bit.

Lots of water is a big deal if they can keep it down.

Speaking like a true "Mom". Thanks Sobe, I'll keep them in mind.

How high are the fevers? If it's anything over 100, definately try to get them down.

The best way I've found to get the fevers down is to put an ice pack (one of those gel ones!!) between my knees while I'm resting on my side in the "fetal position". I didn't come across this method until last fall when I woke up and thought... "hey.. I don't feel so good. I'll get some water"; Next think I know, I'm talking to the big white telephone. I was up in Kelowna; 4 hours away from the comfort of my bed!! By the time I got home (and several stops along the way for launching duties) I was beyond nauseated and was running a high fever. My doctor told me to put the ice pack between my knees and I could wrap myself up but keep my knees exposed and iced. Don't ask me why, but it worked. I was willing to try anything at that point. Hate launching.

Like everyone said, chicken soup is always nummies. If she's feeling nauseated, steep some ginger in hot water for 5-10 minutes, add some honey and let her drink that. Because her body is all upity at the moment, sticking to clear fluids is best. Let her suck on some saltines and if she can handle it, JELLO!!!

As for da puppy, if he's not eating solid food at all let me know. I'll look up in my book of home remedies for animals. Right now all I can think of is if he's still got a fever maybe he'd like some beef broth (diluted a little) ice-cubes. He's losing nutrients as well =(

Hope your household feels better soon!

Thanks Lea for the tips!

Update:

Well, both my wife and her cousin seem to be recovering really well. Seemed like lots of rest, soup, and drugs (Tylenol Cold/Flu) did the trick. Fortunately, both didn't have a high enough fever to having to resort to the ice pack or anything else.

Took the pup to the Vet and it turns out he doens't have anything too serious. Just an very upset stomach due to eating crumbs off the floor. My wife's cousin's kids are 2 and 4 years old, so you get the picture.

As for me, I'm totally exhausted. I'm starting to look forward to being sick. Laying in bed, not having to work, while the wife serves me breakfast, lunch, and dinner in bed, and the pup bringing me my newspaper in the morning is starting to sound really good. :D
