but i picked up CS again, go figure.

Kind having fun on a server i found running a Warcraft3 mod (a mod to a mod, heh)

you get exp points for kills, and as you level gain access to skills based on WC3 abilities. kinda neat little distraction. sucks thoughw hen you come in towards the end of a game and the whole other team is invisible, hah. :)

I've always been curious about CS. As a complete CS n00b, where is a good place to check it out, where I won't totally piss people off with my n00bish incompetence?

eh, there are so many servers, doesn't matter. just go wherever.

and yes, it's a mod with wc3 LIKE abilities. for instance...

you pick your race (humans, undead scourge, orcs, elves)

each race has 3 base abilities that each have 3 levels of power and 1 "ultimate" ability they can get at level 6.

You get exp for kills you make and such, and go up levels. each level you can get a new skill level. skills are as follows

humans:
invisible - you get more invisible with each rank
bash - chance to stun opponent for 1 second when you shoot them, chance to stun increase with each rank
divine aura - more base health (115, 130, 145...at ranks 1, 2, and 3 respectively)
ultimate ability: teleport (transport to a teammate)

undead scourge:
unholy aura - run faster (speed increases with ranks)
levitation - jump higher (height increases with ranks)
vampiric aura - get health back per damage you do (amount of health you get back inreases with rank)
ultimate ability: suicide bomber (when yo die, you explode doing damage to enemies around you)

orcish horde:
equipment reincarnation - you have to buy equipment in CS, if you die you lose it. this gives you a chance to respawn with some of your equipment you died with. (chance to keep equipment increases with ranks)
critical strike - chance to do 2, 4, or 6 times damage on a shot. (not sure what percentage is...15, or 30% I think. you start off at 2 times damage at rank 1, then 4, then 6 finally at rank 3)
grenade critical strike - grenades do more damage (always do more damage, first at 2 times, then 4, then 6 at rank 3)
ultimate ability: chain lightning (mwuahahahha)

night elves of kalimdor:
trueshot aura - more damage per strike (i forget the numbers, but it's a percent more damage. the percent increasing with rank. unlike critical strike, this ALWAYS works.)
evasion - chance to avoid a shot completely. (chance increases with rank)
thorns aura - percentage of damage done to you reflected back at attacker (percentage increases with rank)
ultimate ability: ensnaring roots - stops opponent from moving for 10 seconds. (they can still turn/fire and stuff, but they can not walk. aka: sitting duck :))

all and all, pretty fun. Most servers you get a decent amount of exp per kill, and you can change races inbetween rounds and your exp carries over. so you can hop from skillset to skilset as you desire, and your exp resets at mapchange. one server i have found, however, has perpetuating exp. you get much less exp per kill, but it carries over forever. also, your exp is race independent (i.e. if you get 2000 exp as a human, and are level 4 or whatever...but you have never played undead scourge...if you change to the scourge, you are lvel 0 with no skills and 0 exp as the scourge. but you can change back to a level 4 human if you want) kinda neat, something to work for. haven't played to terribly much on that server yet, up to level 5 as a human.
