Anyone running a SSD?

I got in on one of Newegg's recent Black November deals to try to catch my 4-year old system up a bit. I've now got Win7 and Steam (and pretty much nothing else) on the SSD and everything else on a secondary data drive. TF2 loads maps in seconds (versus...a minute? before). My frequent stuttering and crashing is mostly gone now as well. Though that may partly also be the companion RAM upgrade I made (4->12 gigs). :naughty: So now I need to reinstall more games...

I haven't yet tried either of the main tools for faking Steam out, letting you keep all your games on the slow data drive and just the few you're playing on the fast SSD. (SteamTool Library Management or Steam Mover, http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/11/15/joy-install-steam-games-to-other-drives/)

Any tips from other SSD users? It's like my computer is brand new again...

SSDs rule. I've had one about 2 years now as my boot drive. Steam is on a spinner drive, as are most games. I usually keep 1 or 2 games I'm playing a lot on the SSD, and the rest on the spinner. Same with programs: I have my browser, winamp, etc on the SSD, and stuff that are really big or I don't care about load times (Office) on the spinner. My SSD is only 80GB, but I tend to have 35GB or so free most of the time. Movies, music, Photos go on either the spinner or a NAS.

But ya, I would never want to be without an SSD now. I keep hoping my spinny drive at work dies. ;)

Cool..I'm now running a similar setup (minus the NAS). I'd always had a data drive for music, photos, and docs, so now I'll just also use it for some game backups and any apps I don't care about loading quickly. Maybe the SSD will help make up for the crappiness of iTunes now. :)

I've got 33 gigs free on this 120 gig drive, so I think it's time to figure out the steam mover before I pull down any more games.

Freak, have you noticed any improvement from TF2 load times?

I got a SSD a few months ago. Windows 7 cold boots up like it was waking up from stand-by mode. Unfortunately, SSDs are expensive and you don't get a lot of storage. It's amazing how quick a 120 GB drive will fill up but ..OMG..they are freaking FAST. If you're looking to boost your computer's performance, a SSD is one of the best investments you can make. Thinking about picking up another one.

Yes, TF2 loads so much faster now! I haven't tried last week's engine updates, which may further improve stuttering (mostly gone with the SSD); if they improve load times then things may be speeding up doubly.

For space, I'm just keeping an eye on things and using SteamTool to offload any stuff I want to keep around but only play infrequently. I'm dreading putting Picasa back on as it creates a huge image cache that's going to eat up a bunch of space.

But quick load times have helped me finally start in on my gaming backlog, so I'm now a good ways through Metro 2033. :)
