Anybody got it. Is it worth $30?

If you like Role Playing it is probably worth the $30.
It is not quite as good as Baldur's Gate(IMO), but it is still a fun game. The only thing I didn't like was that you could only control one character.
I just read a review which said SoU is a better single player campaing than the one included in the original NWN. It has longer gameplay and is supposed to be very funny. NWN is not my kind of game, but from the reviews I would think it's worth the money if you enjoyed NWN.

I loved NWN. the depth of the game is astounding. if you are one to search every nook and cranny, you will be enjoying this game for many, many hours. +30 I would say.

I just started SoU this weekend and i can already tell it's better story-wise than the original campaign. The new tilesets look good.
Gotta agree with Ink here, Baldur's Gate, BGII, ToB are STILL superior to anything else that's come out since (RPG-wise).

I've always enjoyed hiding in the basement with my friends till the wee hours of the morning for whole weekends while we played D&D. The DMs were never that spectacular, we were extremely unorganized and our characters died a lot. Ever since those days I have been looking for good role playing games. Not just the pencil and paper games. You tend to need a few other people and much time to get through a campaign. What I started looking for were games I could sit down by myself and get immersed in. I found them. Ultima III - VI, Bard's Tale, Wizardy, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Pool of Radiance.... just to name a few of the early games I was thrilled with.
I think I liked those because it was new. Its not like they had great graphics, or fantastic armor and weapons of great power. Those games grew old. Mostly because I could crush one down in a matter of a few dedicated hours. They still lacked something.
Fast forward a few years and much gaming. Baldur's Gate. Wow. It seemed to have it all, good character story, great graphics and snippets from the Forgotten Realms literature. I played that game and its expansions. I loved it! It was still missing something.
For a long time I thought what it was missing was the imagination element that you just cant get when someone else draws the pictures for you. My own vision of certain creatures is far better than what I see drawn. Granted, I could never draw them, but they held special significance to me.
Bring on the Neverwinter Nights.
This game had it all. independant character development. an obscene number of side quests, great weapons of power and a dedication to the third addition ruleset that made the game mechanics feel really good. The monsters were done well, the sounds were great. It was very immersive. For some reason though, I didnt feel this game suffered from the lack of spice that my imagination lends to a D&D game.
I found what truely made this game stand out. I didn't feel like it was going to be over when I finished the module it shipped with. One can create his or her own adventures. This thought stayed with me even when I was about to finish the game. Open ended. Just like your characters in paper&pencil D&D. They can live on in other modules. I really think that is what draws me to this game again and again.
By the way, I have completed a module of my own design. I have to find where I put the completed mod and I'll see about making it available to everyone here.

That's fine to post like you did. How else are we to know what your ideas and opinions are?
O is a madman and has an original perspective on games. Treat him like one of our own folks! :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence F7! Course, I still cringe when you address me, since usually you are addressing me with the business end of some weapon.

Better way to do it rather than spend $30 for the 2nd expansion, is to check out what they have at a Sam's Club or Costco. I got the Gold Version (Original and 1st Expansion) for only $17. I'm sure it was a mistake or something, so I bought 2 of them and sold one to one of my other buddies. Normally the Gold versoin sells for $40. I would buy the 2nd expansion for $30 rather than the 2nd if you like NWN because the level caps gets raised to Level 40 in the Hordes of the Underdark (2nd expansion). You just won't be able to play any of the 6 prestige classes of SOU. Plus if you wait, you prob will be able to pick it up later for around $20 if you must have it.
