Ok, I have had Mario Golf for about a couple months now, so I think it is time to give my impressions of it.
- Content. That is the HUGE plus in this game. There are so many damn game modes it will take a LONG time to play them all and to master them all. I still haven't played all the modes.
Here is a quick breakdown of the modes...
Tournament: Your basic golfing tournament. Get the lowest score out of the computer opponents and you win. Fairly basic. Once you complete the normal tournament, you open the Star Tournament, which is much more difficult, with harder computer opponents and fast greens.
Character Match: You challenge a single opponent to a round of golf... You get a "coin" if you win a hole, the opponent gets a "coin" if he/she wins the hole. Whoever gets 9 coins first wins. You unlock star modes for the characters if you beat them in Character Match.
Club Slots: Each hole you have a slot machine determine what 3 clubs you can use for the course. Some holes you may get left with no drivers, or no short irons, so it gets pretty crazy trying to compete on certain holes with bad clubs.
Coin Challenge: There are pockets of coins scattered around the holes and you try to get as many as you can AND get par. I haven't played this one much yet.
Near Pin: You play on a bunch of par 3 holes, getting 1 shot a hole. You add all your distances from the holes together and try to get the lowest. If you don't land on the green, you get 100 added to your distance (can't remember if it is feet or yards).
Birdie Challenge: You play the same par 3 holes mentioned above. You try to get as many birdies in a row as possible... once you don't get birdy, you are out.
Rings: My favorite mode. You get a set number of rings on a hole that you must hit your ball through AND make par. This is an AWESOME mode to play with friends. If you play it coop mode you all must combine to get all the rings and you all must make par. Gets kind of tense when somebody has to make a long chip to make par.
That is most of them... there are some smaller ones but those are the biggest and most fun. Rings Coop is worth the game by itself almost. Then through in trying to beat each other's near pin scores, the tournaments, the club slot crazyness, etc... you have one hell of a game.
Besides the modes... there are a crapload of characters. I don't remember how many, something like 16... you have the regulars like mario and dk... then some new guys like shado mario and baby bowser. They all have some hilarious animations and taunts (you can taunt during opponents swings).
There are a lot of courses... I think there are 6 tournament courses, which certain holes are used for the rings competitions. Of those 6, 4 are more normal courses, while the last 2 are more crazy and "mario-like". For instance, one hole has a bunch of warp pipes you can choose to try and hit your ball in to take short cuts to the hole... as well as some chained up chomps that take your ball if you hit too close. There is also the special birdy course used for the near pin and birdy challenge. All the holes are pretty unique and very fun.
The gameplay is pretty simple... i mean it is a golf game. You can basically either go automatic or manual with your swing. Automatic lets you just press the button once for power and an auto picker hits the accuracy part. The auto picker usually picks pretty close to accurate, never way off, though it can sometimes be enough to cause a big problem. The manual mode has you hit the power and the accuracy and lets you put top spin, back spin, super top spin, or super backspin on the ball. I always use manual because of the spins... if you are quick enough you can get teh hang of adjusting what spin you want to use to compensate for how good/bad you nailed your power.
There is also a pretty cool replay saving feature where it saves 18 birdy replays, 18 eagle replays, 18 albatross replays, and 18 hole in 1 replays. It is kind of cool to try and get a great hole and brag about it with the replays.
Ok... the mini review is getting a tad big soo I will end it there. I highly recommend the game. There is so much damn content in the game, my friends and I have played it for a long time and still haven't beaten all the 3 player rings holes and haven't even started on the 4 player rings holes. There is so much in the game it will keep you playing it for a long time... and the fact that the modes are pretty different and unique make sure you don't get too bored played the same thing over and over again.
