View Full Version : Wireless options?
I'm pondering getting my wife a laptop. I'd want it to be wireless so she could roam the house with it while still having access to our broadband and printer while my PC can remain wired to our broadband.
Can somebody suggest some best options for wireless connectivity and routing allowing us both to be online?

As I understand it, you're going to want a wireless router that supports 802.11g (which is 54 mbps) like the one shown here. Some wireless routers also carry the standard RJ45 network cable ports, so you can still use your network cable while your wife uses the wireless feature.

And a wireless network card shown here (desktop):

And one for the laptop:

Yup, most wireless routers have regular LAN ports on them. The other option, assuming that you already have a router, is just a wireless AP (access point) that will add-on to your existing wired network. I tried that myself, but wound up prefering to just have a router with both built in .. uses fewer power outlets, which my disco ball needs. :p
If you wanna go uber-pro, D-Link has a wireless router with 4 Gigabit ports, instead of the usual 10/100, if you're into that kind of thing.
Either way, definately secure the wireless. I've had all kinds of fun with my neighbor's wireless before. (Theirs had a better ping to UP UT servers at the time, so I just used theirs when playing instead of mine :p )
rofl Krapper- Thanks Phan-
I'll price it out and see.
Much appreciated.
