View Full Version : Friday night WoW

Sobe is starting a WoW trial week on Friday and I'm creating a new character at the same time to help her get started. If anyone else is interested in joining up, chime in by posting in this thread.

The server hasn't been selected yet, so post your location and PvP/PvE preference and we'll try to choose something centrally located. (The honor/dishonor system turned out to be vaporware so I'm leaning away from PvP, but if most people want it then I'm game. Ganking isn't a problem yet at low levels and later on it should be tolerable with a group to back each other up.)

Also post your race/class preference. Gnomes and dwarfs are probably the best for this because they start out in the same area and have the widest range of class choices available (everything except druid and shaman) so we can choose complementary classes. Humans can meet up with dwarfs and gnomes around lvl10 or so in Ironforge or Stormwind. However, if everyone wants to be Horde I'd be up for that too.

Okay, here's the plan:
Server - Lightbringer, Normal (PvE) Pacific server with a medium population
Faction: Alliance
Sobe and I are playing dwarfs so any dwarfs or gnomes can start in the same area (Dun Morogh) with us.

My character is Sal, a Dwarf Hunter.
If you want to join in tonight, send me a /tell when you log in.
Hit Enter to get the chat prompt and type
/tell Sal whatever you want to tell me

I'm going in now so we can start any time after 5PM PST.

Cheers,
Salyavin

I am a little cofused...I thought you got a trial month, but only after paying for the game. Am I mistaken?

I am a little cofused...I thought you got a trial month, but only after paying for the game. Am I mistaken? The collector's edition has pass that allows a friend to try the game for a week. She knows someone with the CE and is using that pass.

Otherwise you're right, the first month of the game is included with the purchase price.

Thanks for clearing that up Sal.

Interesting policy. I'm better off keeping the h*ll away from mmorpgs anyway. :bash:

I'll try and make it to help you guys out, but I'm not 100% sure on what's going on.

If so, server type doesn't matter; I'm partial to starting a Troll or Orc (mainly because my other characters are alliance), but either faction will work. I'd suggest a normal server, just to learn the basics and get the gist of the game.

Unfortunately, this weekend is going to be crazy for me, so I'm not even sure if I'll be able to touch the computer at all. If I can, though, I'm sooooo there. =D

Sweet!! =D

Hmm....the great thing about this game is it can cater to many different playstyles; so what's fun for you, might not be fun for someone else who instead finds another fun class to play.

Me, I'm having a blast with my Paladin. I'm a decent melee damage absorber, I do decent damage as well, I have heals, I have a few other cool tricks, but most importantly it's a very active class. I always have something to do during a fight, and there's nothing better than taking sole responsibility for keeping your partner and yourself alive while you tear through 4-6 +3 monsters that attack you. >:)

My suggestion on characters would be to start a warrior, learn the basics of the game, then try out each class by creating new characters. The game is going to be around for a long, long time, so no need to rush through the content. =)

As far as servers, it's exactly like CoH in that you can choose any server to play on, but your characters can NOT switch from server to server. For example, I have a lvl 24 Paladin and a lvl 19 Rogue on Doomhammer. I can choose to play on Sargeras, but I'd have to create a brand new character to play there. I cannot transfer my Paladin or my Rogue to Sargeras.

Looking at it another way, there are currently 88 servers to choose from, and each server can hold a total of 10 characters for your account. If you played on every server, and used up every slot, you'd have 880 characters to keep track of. Kind of mind-boggling when you think of it that way.

Hope this helps!

well.. I wan to make sure I'm in the right server with ALL OF YOU!!.. specially Idol.. i like bugging him, like i did in COH! hehehehe

well.. I wan to make sure I'm in the right server with ALL OF YOU!!..That's what I'm hoping to do as well... try and find a server we can all play on together.

The problem is there's 88 servers in the US and they just removed the timezone information. I've been playing on a server in the Central timezone and I get pings of ~150-300. It's playable (ping is a lot less critical in this game than in a shooter) but I have lost sync with the server a couple times. Only three times in many, many hours and logging out and back fixed it, but I'd prefer something a little closer.

It looks like most of the people who want to play are nearer the west coast, so I'm going try to find a web page with the server location info. I'll pick a Pacific TZ PvE server with Medium population. Medium should have enough other players to group and trade with but not so many that there's a lot of competition for kills.

I'll also post the Alliance/Horde faction as soon as Sobe says what race/class she wants to play.

Cheers,
Salyavin

Personally, it's much better than CoH.

On the MMO line, of the games I've played, I'd rate them like this:

WoW > EQ > CoH > AO > DAoC > UO > Planetside > Horizons

CoH is a great game, though. It was nice to break away from the fantasy realm that most other MMOs try to emulate. CoH included some great gameplay, features and overall a great community. The CoH team proved that you can build a solid game while keeping consistent communication with your playerbase. The CS team there is second to none in an industry that's infamous for horrible service.

The problem I had with the game, though, is it was too casual. There was no "carrot on the stick" to give me incentive to level higher. Money was easily found, so buying your enhancements was never a problem. Once you hit lvl 32, the only thing you have left to look forward to is maxing out your levels and SOs. Once you hit 50, gameplay stopped.

Enter WoW: same quick gameplay (though not as quick), but add in items and a multitude of skills and races. (OMG PH4T L3WTZ). Where CoH left off, WoW has picked up seamlessly.

Imo, WoW is the best MMO right now. While it doesn't usher in anything genre-breaking or "unique", it does what it does near-flawlessly.

Addiction, I dub thee renewed!

Edit: I almost forgot, CoH has the best character generation of any game I've ever seen. Sooo much uniqueness. Too bad the character classes weren't as diverse as their costumes.

Nice turnout tonight. Lots of fun playing with you folks, even the ones who were only able to stay for a bit.

Here's the roster so far on Lightbringer:

Jen - Fayle, gnome rogue
ProphetSix - Zapt, gnome mage
Salyavin - Sal, dwarf hunter
SoBeiT - Sobeit, dwarf priestess
SuperDank - Superdank, gnome warlock

Anyone's welcome to join in, just send me a /tell. I'll be on as much as possible over the weekend (yes, it is addictive :)).

Big turnout, sorry i missed it. work and then counseling a friend in tough times, fun!

are you guys gonna stick on these chars on lightbringer? might make me switch at least partially...though it would be phenominally tough to ditch my now 26 hunter on Burning Legion (pvp gets fun when you get old enough to not get one shotted by 80% of the people you find! :))

k lets see....paladin so got tank covered, rogue mage and hunter so thats a bagillion damage...warlocks for support and off tanking....priest for healing....

hrm, might make a druid to get up in the mix. That would be nice to fill any gaps in the group if this becomes a regular thing. Plus...who doesn't like shapeshifting? :) course i would be the only non gnome/dwarf...and i do love me some gnome action (...long story, started in tiajuana)...hrm. Decesions decesions.

Anyhow, time to get back to my leatherworking on my hunter!...must make artisan level! rawr!

Decesions decesions.Night elf would be a good addition. On a non-PvP server it's a lot easier to get through the Wetlands to Ironforge at a lower level, so you'd be able to meet up with us. Also, it's easy for a druid to travel back and forth between the continents... set your hearthstone in Ironforge or Loch Modan and use Teleport to Moonglade and the free hippogriff from Moonglade to get back to Darnassus.

For those that don't know, you can customize your user interface. If you know XML, you can go to the UI Customization forum on the WoW site.
For others, like myself, you can download a great program called cosmos. There are so many options you can use. I really like the fact I can have more buttons for attacks.

Here is the link to cosmos, it's very simple just unzip the contents to the Program Files\World of Warcraft directory. Launch the game, get into the world and hit "esc" and choose Cosmos options to tailor the UI to your needs.

http://www.cosmosui.org/I installed the beta to try it out. It's going to come in very handy for my hunter and all the buttons he has to manage. I had three bars full of actions and I kept having to rearrange them to keep my main actions on a single bar. w00t for more buttons! :)

The only drawback is that now my chat text box is getting squeezed (I moved it up but it has less lines now). I'll need that Tell Tracker to keep track of multiple ongoing conversations...
