Hey gang-

Here is a thread wher you can ask for help or share spoilers.

A few things: if you don't want to see any spoilers, LEAVE NOW. Go to Electrichead's thread for the spoiler-free discussion. (http://www.gamingasylum.net/showthread.php?t=3556)

Secondly, ANYTHING you post in here MUST use "spoiler tags." These will black out the text and you can then highlight the text to see the spoiler. This will allow you to be selective about what you see. Just click and drag the cursor over the blacked out text to view.

to use a spoiler tag- put the word spoiler in brackets at the start of the text and /spoiler in brackets after, same as you would for B and /B etc.

For example:

StealthDP has nothing under his robe :naughty:

I am in a room that had man-hacks in it...with a bunch o' flammable barrels.

I blew up the barrels.

Now I can't jump high enough to a wee hole in the top of the room.

Is there the double jump combo option...I can't seem to make a crouch-jump work.

BTW, It runs great. Also weapon+flashlight=good.

Top of the room? I found some non-flammable barrels in the same room, they don't float either. Of course, there's got to be an easier way, and I'm not altogether certain that where I ended up was any better. Think, ‘spools’.

And how doew one attach a spoiiler screenshot?

The plastic barrels are great. Especially the sounds they make when you shoot them.

Good thing I found that damn washing machine. I threw everything at that damn pulley to get the ramp to go up. And I wish my hands were attached to the steering wheel of the hovercraft.

I pushed the washing machine into the basket which raised the ramp to be able to jump over it. You will be able to drive the hovercraft all of the way to Black Mesa East. You just have to find things to open up the waterways.

LOVE the puzzles... especially those where you can just step back... look at the seen and puzzle it out in your head, especially:

In the canals, where you must destroy the pole on the other side of the fence, releasing the cabled iron, which swings across on blows out the spillway doors... great physics. Very Myst-like in the sensation of reward you get for figuring it out. And of course, the washing machine/ramp and the ramp requiring you sink the barrels under the basket.

Hi Hort. Hiya Shirl!

lol ;) :p

My egg is not a very exciting one, but it is something I figured not many people would see. Has anyone found it? Did you guys get it right off and am I just blowing hot air.

When you first take the boat into enemy fire. Stop where that first set of foot soldiers is and in the wall of the canal you will see a couple of spill ways. The one on the left is open. Go in that.

I've actually found some really cool bits with the boat. Like several places where health and items are hidden way up on top of platforms and if you smash the supports it falls down.

Unfortunately I had to turn anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering off and turn the water reflections to basic. But it still looks sweet.

Been a member here for quite some time just have never posted. Nice to see some familiar faces :D

alright. I need to play more puzzle games apparently cause I don't know all the problem solving conventions. I just killed that chopper that drops the azz loads of bouy mines, and I need to get that flood gate to raise to jump through. I've driven around for a couple hours now but can't figure anything out. Hint?

Hort
11-20-2004, 09:35 AM
Trying to remember...

Which one specifically? If it is the area with the broken/shorted valve... see the flammable barrel behind the fence? ;) If it's the latter one (last?) you just need to walk up and release the valve up top... you are getting out and exploring those areas when you come to a lock/damn, right?

King Mango
11-20-2004, 11:03 AM
Yeah exploring plenty. It was something I've been trying but haven't been able to do. But I don't think we're talking about the same spot Hort. This is the very last puzzle before black mesa east. The little shack has two switches and the one on the left is sparking.
I had to use that berm on the side of the wall to jump the boat up to the top of the damn then go throw the switch. Then went through to black mesa east.
Which I tried a BUNCH of times but couldn't get to work lolz
Now I'm stuck in ravenholm where that body is stuck to the electrodes on the fence. I've tried shooting all the wires and stuff. Stacking stuff to hop over the fence. I've shot through the window to that far electrode but nothing seems to work. I've tried destroying everything behind it, using the gravity gun (which is second only to UT's impact hammer for best melee weapon ever) to move stuff behind the fene, punting everything in sight lol.

I'm in Ravenholm and have just been handed a shotgun by that maniac preacher dude. lol
Hey is the voice of that guy at the beginning talking on the screens Robert Culp? The agent guy from American Hero?
Speaking of Ravenholm when you're in Black Mesa East has anyone been able to get over the fence where that door is? When the girl walks you back to play fetch with Dog? When you first leave the lab and go down the hall and make the 90 degree left turn and she says "That's the tunnel Ravenholm, we don't go there anymore" if you look to your right there is a door behind a fence. I stacked a bunch of barrels up but couldn't quite make it over.
Well heck I have to get to work. cya guys later

Michelle Forbes - Dr. Judith Mossman
Merle Dandridge - Alyx Vance
Mike Shapiro - Barney Calhoun
Mike Shapiro - G-Man
Harry S. Robins - Dr. Isaac Kleiner
Jim French - Father Grigori
John Patrick Lowrie - Citizens/Misc. characters
Mary Kae Irvin - Citizens/Misc. characters
Ellen McLane - Overwatch voice

Here's some easter eggs I found, anyone else see them? :D

At the very end area of Water Hazard before Black Mesa East, you can see a man in a suit walking with a suitcase. G-Man perhaps? You see him when you climb up the ladder on the broken pier thing, and those soldiers shoot at you.. when you are about to walk to the right to go get to the control box with the level that's shorted out, zoom in on that area. He's right there, and where he walks to is actually a solid wall when you get there.

Also at the same general area, you can go into a pipe across from that guard building.. It is filled with toxic sludge, so you gotta run your arse off to the end then turn left. One of those aliens voiced by Lou Gossett Jr is there, and if you keep talking to him, he'll go on spouting off seemingly endless phrases. He seriously kept me busy for about 7-10 minutes before he started repeating stuff.

I think those are the only easter eggish things I've seen so far, the other hidden stuff is just like, finding an extra cache of powerups. I freakin love this game!

lmao there's a ladder there? I had to jump the boat up to the switch :/ man that took forever. I shoulda got a screen.

Didn't see those though will check them out.

I have a couple gripes about the game though. If I go back and play an earlier episode, the autosaves overwrite the previous top spot. OMFG that is retarded. I had to go from the opening to the mines almost all the way back to the beginning of Ravenholm once cause of that. Why don't they just save in the same slot you started from... meh
Also seems like a bug but Spybot's TeaTimer keeps telling me every time I start HL2 that something in my Creative audio start up settings has been deleted. :/

Had another G-Man sighting. How do you grab a screenshot? I hit F9 and F10 but doesn't look like that did it... Anyways, at the very end of ravenholm, when you come out of the cave into the more open city - there is a train, and if you keep walking along side it, the path is eventually blocked by flipped over train cars and you're forced to go to the left. If you instead go as far forward as you can, and go to the left corner and duck, you can see through a small gap, and G-Man is walking by. :D I love all the little easter eggs they plop in for exploration bonus.

Sweet - all done, so now I can look at this thread. :D What a fun game - I'll have to start it again on hard soon..

Between the ants and the gravity gun and turrets I didn't fire a shot for quite a long time in the game. :D

On Nova Prospekt:
In Nova Prospekt when Alyx tells you guards are coming from all directions and you have 3 turrets at your proposal, how did you set them up? I had 4 turrets because I'd carry one with me whenever possible; I put them in the four corners of the ammo room pointing outwards. Then I crouched by the ammo and wasn't touched during the onslaught except when one of those flying buzzer things skimmed by and nicked me.

Gravity gun + radiator = happy me in the streets of Ravenholm.

I saw the G-man in probably a half dozen places of the game...I remember I caught him on one of the cc camera monitors once and thought that cool..also got a glimpse of him on somebody's TV in a later part of the game.

Hort
11-25-2004, 09:29 PM
I did something similar with the turrets... you played the entire game through in 48 hours?

Freakish
11-25-2004, 09:46 PM
If you sum the total playing time, probably <24..I was out most of Tuesday and half of Wednesday. ;) I stopped to listen to whatever conversations I could and find secrets wherever, but since it was so linear I made pretty good time.

StealthDP
11-26-2004, 07:37 AM
It took me about 17 hours the first time, give or take. Will probably take longer the second time, as I am going to explore the nooks and crannies a bit more...

King Mango
11-26-2004, 09:16 AM
Man that's fast. I've got probably thirty hours and I'm trying to figure out how to get into the supressor thing. Actually got tired of trying to figure it out thirty minutes ago lol any clues? Where you run around outside that courtyard and the 'energy mortars' are pummeling you.

Freakish
11-26-2004, 10:05 AM
Mango..you run a giant S-course across the courtyard... :)

King Mango
11-26-2004, 10:30 AM
thx Freak I spent probably an hour running around that courtyard from side to side (the whole way) and was concentrating on finding a way to turn off those supressor fields, or looking for an opening that the 'energy mortar' might create since it does take out part of that other building...
I actually found it a few minutes ago.
I've been all over that courtyard and discovered this is my third niggle with the game.
All those security supressor fields and you walk through a door. :/ Surprisingly lame for such a high quality game
My other design niggle was the dock where you get the magnet and you have to jump through the window... lol it was awful nice of them to have a wooden ramp built up to the window don't you think?
And I absolutely hate the squad. They are always up my ass keeping me from moving anywhere fast when I need to. If any of you, like me, have dogs that are always under your feet you probably dislike this more than the avg person. I have two aunts who go out of town often and leave their dogs with me and one is a little Papillon toy dog that is constantly up your ass. And the other is a giant mutt that always finds the middle of any hall or walkway the most comfortable place to lie down...
Still though... a door? loloolololol ;)
g-man spoiler- kinda obvious though:
I've only seen the g-man once so far and that was in the menu screen for anti and follow. He walks around in one of the burning buildings then hides.

Freakish
11-26-2004, 10:52 AM

ok..had some fun with the ball in Ravenholm. Worked great in that I could just toss the ball towards some zombies and both they and crabs would cluster around it while I could leisurely throw bricks, blades, etc at them (or just walk on by and grab the ball later). The ball also made things sooooo much easier when those freaky things that gallop across the rooftops come at you. You can get the ball all the way to the mines if you like, but it'll destruct in the water as you leave :(, so I'd suggest you just drop it down the first shaft and let it distract all the crabs while you go jump over the fence and move along. The only tricky part is getting the ball into the church's yard when you're standing on the rooftop where the cablecar comes up...an invisible wall knocks it back unless you shoot it very high, and then it's likely to land on another invisible wall and be gone. If you shoot it high over the slight right side of the big tree in the church's yard it should land inside and be available for your pleasure in the cemetary.

Also, if you're on a ladder peeking over the top, the rooftop zombies can't get you. :D

Hey what's up with that 'poor Gordon' post at UP? :eyes:

Now I forgot what I was actually going to post thx alot ;)

btw have you guys taken a close look at the water effect? It's not like a fluid surface info or procedural mesh like in UT. If you crouch down real low and look down a shoreline you can see that it's a flat sheet and the effect is some sort of shader distortion. There are no actual moving waves. Is it just me or is there no editor for HL?

oh btw finished the game Friday. whew... kinda depressing. Like when I watch my LOTR Fellowship DVD and realize I haven't bought the others yet... :D

Hort

There is an editor- choose Play Games in Steam and scroll all the way down to Source SDK- the FULL SDK with code should be released this week. Of course- you are left editing for CS: Source or mods UNLESS the "surprise" we all expect from Valve this week really is HL2 DM Multi. The base code for multi is already in the game.

On another topic... second time through I am seeing much more of G-man, especially in the water ways.

Freakish
11-28-2004, 10:58 AM

das ok[/tony montan] Freak someone had waaaaay too much time on their hands to think of that one anyway hehe :D

BTW this is how I finished water hazard. I jumped the boat up here... Totally missed the ladder and raising the gate to go through the warehouse area. My coolest accomplishment with the game so far. You have to use the berm of dirt piled up against the wall to the left of the dam come at sort of an angle get the boat sideways, (with the ground to your right) then steer left to give the boat max airborndedness. Took about an hour straight to get it...

thx Hort for the info on SDK. have you tried it yet? I haven't really had time. Also I was wondering. Does anyone else get waves on the shore like FarCry or ONS-IslandHop? Even with all settings on high for me the water has no foam around any edges.

Hort
11-29-2004, 05:53 PM
I've fiddled with SDK a little. People who have used it and Ued say it's similar and maybe easier but so far it seems very counter-intuitive- just to make a cube. ANd the tut's I've seen so far don't help much.

FBMachine
11-29-2004, 06:44 PM
Actually I played with the editor and it seems pretty cool. It has some similarities to UnrealEd... I LOVE the viewport navigation ( press z while the 3d perspective view is selected and you go into a FPS style camera - wasd + mouselook. )
As for being counter-intuitive just to make a cube - that's what I thought of UnrealEd at first since it starts with completely solid space that you subtract from. In Hammer you have to add a solid primitive, and then you can carve away primitives from it ( ctrl+shift+c ). It's really the same thing, just another way of looking at it. Point entities are essentially the same as placeable Actors in UnrealEd, though unlike UnrealEd you can change the class of the entity on the fly without having to delete and replace it, and its available properties update, which is cool. Entities created by using primitives and hitting "toEntity" are essentially the same as Volumes in UnrealEd. So far, that's about all I've learned, enough to make a CS:S box map with player starts and buy zones hehe.
