So it is definately worth the buy? Is it fun single player? It is more of a hardcore fighting game which most of my friends probably won't like since they aren't gamers... so it would end up being a single player game for me probably.
I bought fzero gx and played it a couple hours and it is pretty good. I don't like racing games normally (super mario kart is pretty the only racing game I like). So, me liking fzero must mean it is pretty damn good :)
In a few weeks I will probably buy SCII... but until then... FZero should hold me over.

yes,it's awesome single player. Even thoughi haven't had toooo much time to play, i'm actually out of town right now. I played for about 30 minutes during my lunch break yesterday, and again later for about anohter hour. Totally loved it. Played through and beat the game once with Kilik, my old SCI goto guy. He has some frickin fun ass moves, now. heh
-> -> (vertical strike...hold it) = pole vault mo focker
<- (horozontal + kick) = bitch slap
Started going through weapon master mode, played some with spawn there. Hes got some interesting moves, including a projectile attack. Very weird for SCII. (<- <- horz+kick i think)
The new guy, Rafael, is badass. I knew he would be, he uses a rapier which i knew would be a pain cause hes so frickin fast.
Food time.

Well coming from a Hard(er)Core fighting game fanatic's point of view....
I played the original Soul Blade and Soul Edge. Then Sega was kind enough to make the SoulCalibur machine (Dreamcast cause that's the only game I played on it up until 2 days ago).
The whole weapon master mode was something that should have been included in Soulcalibur which I missed alot from the original Soul Edge.
I've beaten the Master-Mode and unlocked most of the features (aka diffrent weapons per character, unlocked stages, unlocked battle modes, unlocked characters)
Now I did notice that that when you beat Weapon Master mode you unlock extra battles in the master mode and have to basicly re-do the whole thing over again. (But much more difficult)
There is 3 spots I can't quite figure out how to reach on the map and it show's that I haven't completed that stage but still beat the end boss of the entire Weapon Master Mode.
Also I haven't been able to figure out how to obtain the last 3 weapons for each character. Also I don't know who the bottom 3 Question-Marks are on the "Vs" select screen (haven't unlocked) I did see a character named Assasian, Berserker and Lizardman (which was actually playable in the extra Weapon Master mode feature).
As for the game-play itself movement has to be a VERY big improvement and disappointment. The character move much better around the stage and you don't perform a jump, unless you hold block and push in the up direction. The movement disappointment has to go for towards the inability to back up fast enough get get out of the range of certain horizonal and vertical 1-2 combos, which is a hugh turn off especially when rapheal is all over you or Mitsu. I did notice that the computer (and sometimes my friends) will perform a kind of "Faint" move while recieving a combo and slightly move their body out of the way of one of the attacks in the combo string. (I have no clue how this is performed)
Another point on movement has to be excellent use of single tap "Side-steps" which lets you dodge almost any vertical attack and damn near step behind someone.
Other points in the game have to go to weapon collision which i noticed was much tighter. Where the weapon hits is usually where the weapon hits and not just an extra foot like some moves in the SoulCalibur.
Parrying has been tweaked alot. (I don't know if it's just me trying to get use to a PS2 controller, but it was very difficult to time at times)
Other then those mentioned about gameplay the game plays exactly like the original, and feels much better.
As for character notes
Ivy is so a deadly force now with her diffrent stances and excellent range.
Nightmare's sword has been shrunk but the power is still there.
Yoshimitsu has been change alot and I like it.
Mitsurigi has alot more 2hit combo strings and a new 3 hit vertical string he's much more dangerous.
Asteroth has to be OWNing alot (except for raphael when he's right in his face)
Every stage is great to play on.
90% of the English voices suck :p

Is this the one that includes Link in the Game Cube version, or is that another game?Yup. Link in the GC version, Heihachi (from Tekken) in the PS2 version, and Spawn from the depths of crappy comics in the Xbox version. But from what I can hear while my brother is playing it in the next room, Taki kicks all kinds of ass.

Yeah, since my last post I got to play around with Ivy some, just in practice mode, she seemed QUITE deadly. I got into playing Ivy at the tail end of my Soul Calibur obsession, i didn't own a dreamcast...always played at a friend's house. He went beiotchy on us and said he got tired of the game (aka: I we got better than him and after he stopped being able to hand everyone their's asses to them because he played 10000 more hours, he stowed the game :)) but right before that, i was just discovering the beautifuly unique combat stylings of ivy. I'm not disappointed, she has some amazingly cool combos/moves in this version. I'm really gonna have to go through individually and just hone fighting styles with everyone, they are all just so damned cool. :)

Oh hell yeah!! This game is SOOOOO worth the money, especially in an era where few games are.
To answer SiaB's question: Yes, single-player mode is very fun. All of the single-player modes have been great so far (although I've really only been playing the Weapon mode lately).
Unfortunately I wasn't able to play SC too much. I didn't know many people who owned a DC, and I never did buy one (but was very close just to play this game). So I can't compare it to the original, but.....
It seems that all of the characters are pretty well balanced. They all have their strengths and weaknesses; some cheaper than others, but every move has a counter. It took a little bit to get used to not jumping, but the side-stepping feature is da bomb. Parrying is great, but only when you can get the timing down (the only char I have trouble with now is against Maxi).
Like Idle, I'm finding that I want to play every character all the time; they are all just so different and cool in their own right. Although right now I think I like Talim the best.
:D

everyone has trouble with maxi, hes rediculous if he can catch you in his combos...he has such flow. The trick to beating maxi is interupt his rhthym, don't let him control the flow...thats his game. If it's against a button masher, or someone who just does nothing but try and be a whirling dervish with him...side step, poke, follow up, don't let him gain the control back.
Someone who is TRULY skilled with maxi is SCARY. because they CAN bust out the rediculous combos, but they don't do it recklessly. Maxi has really good quick little poke attacks, they'll keep you at bay with those until they see the opening....and then eat you alive with maxi's whirling death.
I like characters that are good at distance, and upclose. That is flexible to me. Thats why i like Kilik, and ivy so much. Kilik has the staff, so obviously he can pound you from a distance, but he also has quick strikes up close if you advance on your opponent.
Ivy has decent kicks, and some ok quick attacks up close...and some of the best throws in the game. If they try to back off...extend her snake-sword into whip form and lash them from across the screen like the little beiotch they are, heh. Nothing like ivy's repeating whip attacks, so awesome. And she has 2 of the BEST throws in the game....hands down. They look about the best, do amazing damage, and you can snag them from a distance with them...they just, you know, happen to be REDICULOUSLY hard to perform, heh. Not as bad as Zangeif's piledriver in street fighter 2 though, heh.
So far my favorite moves though....Kilik's bitch-slap with his stick, and Yunsungs very very evil throw. He throws them to the ground, impales them with his sword in their chest, leaves them on the ground with the sword in them, then does a heel kick on the sword and pushes it in all the way. Nothing like making that your killing blow, heh.

Well I just unlocked a bunch more stuff.
Too include Berserker and Assassin (one more Question-Mark to go and I feel it's gonna be lizardman).
I also unlocked alot of Soulblades for everyone to include beyond the soulblade a legendary weapon and a "Humor" type weapon.
This game has alot of extra play modes. MORE then any other game i've every seen.
Necrid is insane and almost feels out of place in the world of Namco and especially Soulcalibur.
I also found that Heihachi has only 1 true vertical attack which make him very handicapped, cause it isn't very fast :\
Taki is damn quick along with Talim (I enjoy playing both of them)
Anyone else figure out how to unlock more things?
Idle Idol

what would you like to know how to unlock? I have the strat guide :)
I think you should try this turk. For one, get to at least "edgemaster" ranking in weapon master mode (first edgemaster rank is level 72) Then go gback to Chapter 4, Stage 3 (Mizar) and beat it a few more times. It will open up the road to Ailoth, where you can buy many interesting things from the shop....some soul edges...senug's third costume, as well as unlocking your last hidden char :)
have fun :)

I just found one challenge in the wepaon master mode that makes me totally rethink any degree of respect i had for Namco quality control. I've been sitting here for an hour doing nothing but watching the computer gurad block and run away. it's rediculous. it's not fun, it's not challenging, and the fact that it's in the final game makes me weep for the parents of any beta testers for namco who let this one slip by. this is a testament to all things that should NOT be done when playing video games. good thing it's only like 1/900th of the game.

Now the crazy part about this, if you go to Soulcalibur tournaments....
That's how they play :p
The most effective move, cheap-ness to the max, moves with the quickest frame-rates, parry everything kinda people.

It's different with players, i've played players like that, heh. for one, if they were doing nothing but blocking i'd just pick a weapon that penetrates blocking to a percentage and walk away, they could parry/block all they want, heh. if they go to parry, they'll miss one eventually. if they go to block, well then try again in a second. when the computer is just set to "if idle attacks, taki blocks" idle want to bang head into cement until the streets flow with the crimson blood of a weary and distrought young man. :-P
Oh, and for those of you wondernig, i did finally beat that challenege. I don't have the game on so i can't check exact numbers, but it took me roughly 75 attempts.

One of my friend's plays a juggle character....CONSTANTLY juggles and uppercuts. What's fun is to use Taki or Talim and side-step throw if you don't feel like parrying. =)

yeah, i just handed my brothers arse to him. he hasn't really played, just picked it up. but he figured out how to do this really annoying jump attack with spawn..breaks guard, decent damage, knock down, really fast. quite annoying, especially since he is just sitting there slapping the button. so, i had to show him how an experianced player deals with it :)
First, switch to ivy....she has such a nice air throw, and he has such a pention for jumping
then switch to raf...back all the way up to the ringout line, side step, hit him in the back of the head, OLE! one spawn in the drink, tee hee.
Finally finished the stupid game, heh. unlocked everything, all the weapons, etc. only thing left to "acomplish" i guess would be getting level 99 in weapon master...which takes forever an a day :)
I'm just gonna go have fun learning more intricite playing styles for voldo and co.

Alright, after hearing all of your mini-reviews of the game I caved. I haven't played many fighters; dabbled in DOA2, but got bored. This is a great game! Love the weapons and there's lots to do. I took Talim through the first set of missions on the WMM and am starting the second set but I'm confused on a couple of things. What are these stances I keep hearing about and where the hell is Talim's soul edge or caliber weapons? I've seen just about everybody elses but I'm still using the double crescents. Do more weapons become available the second time through?

I'm not sure how well I can answer you questions, but I will try:
1) What are these stances I keep hearing about?
A) I'm not sure how many characters actually have different stances, but there are a few that can change with pressing a few buttons. The advantage of this is it gives you more unique combos and hits than originally, and if your opponent is used to seeing you fight in one stance, switching it up in the middle of the battle can throw his/her defense off. In SCii, unpredictability > all. If you go into practice mode and flip through all of the different button combinations, you will notice there are a few to change the character's stances. And, from this stance, you have different moves you can do.
I.e. Ivy has a stance where she extends her whip-sword and wraps it around herself, hunching a bit; holding the sword in one hand, the end of the whip in the other. From here, she can do a powerful move with the press of one button that does (maybe?) 30-40% damage withing a few seconds.
2) Where the hell is Talim's soul edge and calibur weapons?
B) In WMM, you gain gold while fighting. You can use this gold to buy new weapons and character outfits. If you press -START- at the world screen, and scroll down to -SHOP- and then just buy everything in sight. EDIT: Also, you'll notice that when you beat certain chapters/quests, you will gain new weapons, players and rings to fight in. If you want to use these new weapons, or want to see if you have any other weapons for Talim, press -START- at the world screen again, scroll to -CHANGE WEAPON- (I think it's called that), and then it will list all the weapons available to that character, along with a description of what it does and how it differs from the others.
^---- I BELIEVE that's what you're talking about. If not, I'm sure a few more SC afficionados will be sure to correct me.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion on the stances P6. :)
I know about the shops and changing weapons but specifically where is Talim's Soul Edge or Caliber weapons? I've acquired other character's weapons through winning matches or in shops but have yet to see hers. Any ideas?
Idle Idol
09-04-2003, 12:08 PM
If you play through enough of WMM, you will gain access to a certain chapter. In that chapter, you can buy EVERYONE'S "Soul Edge (complete)" weapon.
Everyone also has a "legendary" weapon. Those are also in a special extended chapter. Just keep playing through all the second missions, beat everything in sight.
There is one chapter where you cannot access unless you are level 72 or above ("Edgemaster" ranking) It branches off of chapter 4, so once you are level 72, go play in chapter 4 some more :)
hope that helps. have fun.

oh, and i forgot to mention...stances...
pick ivy, hit A+B with no direction (tharts horozontal and vertical attacks)
she'll spin her whip behind her body (Spiral Serenade stance)
Press A again, she'll lash the whip out horozontally, then spin around and whirl it over her head now (spiral tribute stance)
press A again, now she will lash her whip down, spin around and wrap herself in it (serpent's embrace stance)
some characters "stances" are more like brief changes in position. Mitsurugi, kilik and others have certain actions you can make them do, but they do not hold that position. Mitsurugi will whirl his sword over his head, this is considered to be "half moon" stance, even though he just moves his sword for a second and does not hold the position. Ivy, Voldo, and Nightmare all have more TRUE stances in that they maintain and can move in those positions.
to see what i mean as far as it being just a movement sometimes, not stance, pick Kilik. Do a quarter circle motion down to forward (D, DF, F)
He will put his staff on the ground, it will glow for a second, and then he will step out. He just holds it there for a second, not even. But, there are several moves you can only do, once he has assumed that position. Try hitting AB or K while he's planting his staff like that (this is monument stance, by the way)
If you look at command list in practice. Whenever a move says something like "Venom Strike ~ Serpent's Embrace" (for ivy) that means that by doing the listed command, she will do the move "vemon strike" and will end up in the stance "serpent's embrace" (that move, by the way, is a quarter circle down to back, and hit/hold B)
And if a move says "During serpent's embrace B" that means in order to perform that move, you must be in the "serpent's embrace" stance :)
I dunno, stances are just fun. I got into them because of Lei in Tekken. Nothing like drunken style (even though in tekken3 his drunken style had like 2 moves, bleh)

BBK_(6)KKK = ringout from 30 feet away
(if you're not sure what that means...
vertical attack, vertical attack, Kick...wait a second (her back will turn as the opponent is kicked into the air)...Forward (hold through the rest of the combo) kick, kick, kick)
it's a freaking EVIL combo if you hit with it.
fun as hell to look at too, weeeey!

Yeah me likes Ivy. (Yes, bought the game finally for gamecube... it rocks).
Ivy is one of those "fun" characters for me that I suck at but love playing with. Ivy, Cervantes, Link, and Yoshimitsu are probably my 4 most fun characters to play with, though I suck with them pretty bad. Talim rules... by far the best, her combos are deadly and she is just so damn quick. I also like Seung Ming or whatever her name is and Kilik, their range is decent and they have some nice combos as well.
I think I unlocked everything (save for some profiles)... pretty damn good game IMO.
I was just wondering... is there a way to play some of the weapon master mode "types" such as the "hot potato/bomb", wall combos, fall once and you die, etc...? Is there an option somewhere to play those in a multiplayer battle? Maybe I need to unlock them?
Would be kind of fun to play against a human with the hot potato mode :)
