View Full Version : How not to use artillery
Orion, Stapuf, and myself were taking a flag and while we were fighting "Memphis" starts dropping rockets on our position. I request for him to stop, but he continues. He then killed Orion and Stapuf. I had to go over and TK him before I could take the flag.
Does anybody read the typed messages?

I saw your msg. and later, when I was spotting for Pal, someone(SFT? possibly Dr. Puf) then asked us to stop. I did right away, Pal didn't launch any other rockets. Result? captured base.
it doesn't take much to pay attention to those messages. I'll be the first to admit that I miss them from time to time though.

Dr. Puf is my dad.
That's a huge pet peeve of mine. Artillery users need to constantly hit ENTER to expand the map so they can see the base they're firing on, and more importantly, friendly colored icons indicating allied troops ready to cap the base.
I had to TK some idiot last night for doing just that after telling him "CEASE FIRE!" over and over.
Speaking of artillery, how do you:
a) Pinpoint a target for the guy with rockets?
b) Lock onto the target someone is setting up for you?
Artillery n00b.

That hitting enter is the major problem...when the flag goes white, it pretty thoroughly obscures the unit colors around it, especially since I play with the mini-map zoomed out to maximum. I try to pay attention to whether or not any friendlies are moving toward a base I'm blasting, but I don't always see someone when they are already there, especially if they don't have a big tank icon.
The moral of this story: carry an umbrella made of 6 inch battleship plate steel. And some earplugs.

Play;
Any player pack with binoculars can call artillery. Just choose the binocs, then click fire.
The artillery uses the ALT-FIRE to bring up the targeting crosshair when artillery is called for. You will have to practice with it a little to get used to it. I would be happy to fire up a temp server and show you how it works. Let me know.

You expect me to read those things! :ink:
BTW, thanks F7...hehe
Also, if somebody calls in a strike, first line up your shot and then check to see where it is going before you fire. Why? Some of the TK'ers are getting clever and are calling in strikes on their own teams positions. I've seen at least 4 bad calls like this in the past week (somebody targeted our own spawnzones, aircraft, and armor). Be careful.
