Hmmm... maybe I should go out and get that additional 512mb RAM- any good deals out there these days?

If you currently have one 512 stick, get a matching stick for dual-channel if your motherboard supports it.

If you have 2x256 and nothing overclocked, another 2x256 should be fine to get you to 1GB. Try to get sticks similar to the ones that you already have, at least the same DDR speed. Other than that, the increase in amount of RAM will probably more than offset any timing differences between different brands of RAM so you can shop by price.

If you have 2x256 and overclocked or tweaked timings, another 2x256 may not be the best solution. I would have likely put too much of a load on the MCH and lost my nice overclock with 4x256. I ended up replacing 2x256 with 2x512 when I upgraded to 1GB. It was a tough call as my 256 sticks were Winbond BH5 and had great timings, but the 512 sticks I replaced them with are DDR550 so I can run them at 1:1 ratio with the FSB.

As for Doom3, there's no MP to speak of so I'll probably wait and get it after the price drops a bit. By that time I'll have a better vid card and a speaker setup where I can finally use the subwoofer ('cause my floor won't be someone else's ceiling).

So you are either moving downstairs or getting something special?The special one. :) Closing is Aug 10 and move-in is on the 12th. After this weekend and 110 temps in the apartment, I'm really looking forward to a real house with central air.
