View Full Version : What's with the names?

Ok, first off, this isn't intended to be a criticism of anybody. No flames please.

I was on the DC server last night, and I saw a player name that really kinda bothered me. It wasn't so much the name itself as it was the fact that I couldn't rationalize the name to the player. The name was "Jew In Oven". I've been playing online games for years. I've gotten to a point where I thought I had some things figured out, and gotten pretty thick-skinned, but this struck a nerve (and no, I'm not Jewish).

I can understand choosing a name based on a fictional character. I can understand one based on a historical person, a celebrity, or their own name in some form or fashion. I can understand picking a name based on a city/country/sports team/car name/animal/or hobby. I can understand a name that's totally made up. I can even understand the people who pick an insulting or vulgar name and then run around TK'ing or blowing up vehicles, or doing any other thing to act like a prick. This guy, as far as I could tell, played as a team player, didn't TK, and wasn't abusive on the chat channels. So, why would someone who behaives in the game pick a name like that? Is it that blatently racism, and if so, why bring it into a computer game? Do you think he did it hoping to provoke a response and nobody took the bait?

I've played Battlefield on several clan servers, and I've seen admin messages about no racism/bad language and so on being allowed, and I've seen admins enforce it. I was a little surprised no one said anything to him last night, at least when I was on.

Like I said, this isn't meant to pick on this guy for what name he chose to use in game, or to the criticize admins for not asking this guy to change his name. I've just never seen something like this from somone who wasn't intentionally acting like a dick as well. And honestly, I haven't seen as much childishness and bad manners on any of the other online games I've played...at least not in the quantity they seem to have come to BF in. I'm glad that, by and large, you guys don't stand for it on your server. I used to play public servers for UT, Quake 2, and Tribes 2. I was in the last beta test of Planetside, and played Multiplayer Battletech on through AOL for 2 years. Never saw it on those games to the extent I see it in Battlefield. I don't venture beyond the 2 or 3 clan servers I've come to enjoy (ones with kickbots and actively playing admins). The public servers are FULL of scum.

Pal, even wasting 5 seconds trying to figure out the average online game player is an exercise in futility.

Don't waste your time on someone like that.

Were any admins on? I have a hard time believing noone said anything if there were admins there.

I said something when I joined, to the effect that it was offensive and advised him to change his name. No response though.

Cheers,

I said something and asked him to change his name several times, but he ignored me. Like Palisin said, he didn't tk, or spam and was a team player. It's a shame he used such a name ans spoiled his otherwise good behavior.

It was late and no admins were on.

 What a scum. Sorry, I wasn't there to see it. I would have quickly reprimanded him with a warning, followed by a kick, then a ban if he didn't change his name. This sort of crap is definitely not allowed here! :spank:

I would have banned him without warning.

If you see something like that again, post it in this forum. There is a decent chance that somebody will see it in time to take care of it.

Well I was there. I saw the name.

I didn't like it myself and wasn't sure we were doing the "please change your name" here or not.

I received a lot of private messages & emails (in the past) over the "please change your name" requests, everything from a name nazi to a controlling b*tch. So you may see why I was hesitant to jump in again.

So I apologize for doing nothing Paladin.

I will in the future take action if this site decides to watch what is on the screen name wise.

I didn't see any of the requests for him to change his name. Is there a way to send private messages, like a tell or something? Then again, running and shooting (and dying) makes it a little hard to keep up with the stuff flying by on the message ticker.

Yeah, a kick would have been nice if he wasn't changing his name, since he seemed to be ok otherwise. I guess we'll have to wait for the 1.45 patch to add a rolled up newspaper to smack people like that across the nose with.

Maybe it's just me..........

But, "Jew in Oven" is friggin' over the top. I would not only ban without warning, I would like to visit that guy in a dark alley.

I don't think you were reading the message Paladin, but I sent my messages for all to see. I saw Sal's messages.
