Ok, first off, this isn't intended to be a criticism of anybody. No flames please.
I was on the DC server last night, and I saw a player name that really kinda bothered me. It wasn't so much the name itself as it was the fact that I couldn't rationalize the name to the player. The name was "Jew In Oven". I've been playing online games for years. I've gotten to a point where I thought I had some things figured out, and gotten pretty thick-skinned, but this struck a nerve (and no, I'm not Jewish).
I can understand choosing a name based on a fictional character. I can understand one based on a historical person, a celebrity, or their own name in some form or fashion. I can understand picking a name based on a city/country/sports team/car name/animal/or hobby. I can understand a name that's totally made up. I can even understand the people who pick an insulting or vulgar name and then run around TK'ing or blowing up vehicles, or doing any other thing to act like a prick. This guy, as far as I could tell, played as a team player, didn't TK, and wasn't abusive on the chat channels. So, why would someone who behaives in the game pick a name like that? Is it that blatently racism, and if so, why bring it into a computer game? Do you think he did it hoping to provoke a response and nobody took the bait?
I've played Battlefield on several clan servers, and I've seen admin messages about no racism/bad language and so on being allowed, and I've seen admins enforce it. I was a little surprised no one said anything to him last night, at least when I was on.
Like I said, this isn't meant to pick on this guy for what name he chose to use in game, or to the criticize admins for not asking this guy to change his name. I've just never seen something like this from somone who wasn't intentionally acting like a dick as well. And honestly, I haven't seen as much childishness and bad manners on any of the other online games I've played...at least not in the quantity they seem to have come to BF in. I'm glad that, by and large, you guys don't stand for it on your server. I used to play public servers for UT, Quake 2, and Tribes 2. I was in the last beta test of Planetside, and played Multiplayer Battletech on through AOL for 2 years. Never saw it on those games to the extent I see it in Battlefield. I don't venture beyond the 2 or 3 clan servers I've come to enjoy (ones with kickbots and actively playing admins). The public servers are FULL of scum.
