Good single player game. Real good. Amazing graphics. You will need a decent rig to run all the eye candy. Definately worth the money for the SP aspect.

Multi isn't worth a crap.

I enjoyed the multi for some time. It wasn't UT99 but I did have fun. SP is one of the best ever.

1 gig of ram would help.

Yeah. You have a great rig, but I would get another 512 of memory if I were you. It will make a HUGE difference in the latest games. BF'42, BFV, Far Cry, and Join Ops will ALL perform MUCH better for you with some more memory. 1 gig is kinda the standard for gaming now.

Really? um i have pc3200 i think... so if i were to buy a stick, i would just put in the slot and everything will be fine? will i have to do configurations?

do you suggest any 512 sticks that r fairly cheap? ie 100 or less

Inkswitch

Another stick and you will definately see a big difference.

Yes. You want to get the same speed you have now. If you can find the same kind you have in there now, that would be best. But, you can put any decent stick of 3200 in there and be OK. Ask the clerk when you get to the store and he should be able to point out some good memory. Don't get the cheapest stuff. That cheap memory can sometimes give you a problem. Something in the mid-range for a stick of PC3200 512 shouldn't be more than 100 at the moment. Corsair, Geil, Mushkin, Kingston are some of the better brands. I only use Corsair, myself.

http://www.build-your-own-computer-tips.com/install-ram.html

That link should show you how to install it. Just don't force it and make sure the notch on the stick matches up to the notch in the slot.

You shouldn't have to config anything. It should just show up as more memory. It MAY want to reboot once. Some rigs like to restarted after the first boot with new memory.

If you know what brand and model motherboard you have, I can look it up and tell you if there is anything special you need to do. The only thing I can think of is that you might have to set your BIOS to run in dual channel since you have two sticks. Dual channel is a lot faster than JUST the two sticks.

Inkswitch

Nah. No problemos. RAM is about the easiest hardware to install. It should just fire right up and give you better game performance right off the bat.

ok.. i was wondering... should i get TWO 256 sticks? will that cost less? or more? or stick with a 512?

Inkswitch

I assume you have one stick of 512 at the moment. That is what you want. One stick of 512 PC3200 DDR to match the stick you have in there now.

If your board has colored memory slots, put the new stick in the same colored slot as the original. That is how you run memory in dual channel. If they are all the same color, just put in the closest slot to the original.

Now, sometimes (rarely) you might have to switch the sticks around into different slots before they will run. I don't know why this is, but it just works out that way. You probably won't see that, I just wanted to let you know that may happen. If it does, just switch slots and try again.

no, dell gave me 2 256 sticks

Inkswitch

Well, you won't be able to run in dual channel with 3 sticks, but it will still be way better than just the 512. One stick of 512 should be fine.

Do you know the model/brand of your motherboard?

Power down and stick it in. Unplug your rig, first. And, before you touch the memory, make sure you touch the metal frame of your PC with your finger. No static that way.

Report back w/ any problems. You're gonna love Far Cry,.

ok i did i went to setup screen says installed memory 1024.. memory single channel...but AGP aperature is set at 128 but can go to 32 64 or 256 mb?..... and i jsu botted and said new hardware might not work if i dont reboot... how will i know if theres a diffrence in the game?

Inkswitch
06-27-2004, 11:42 AM
You probably won't be able to tell a difference with Far Cry since you never played it before. But, trust me. It NEEDS 1024 to run well. Same with all the BF games and JO and a few others.

Just reboot and go! Looks like everything went good. 128 aperture is fine. Make sure the AGP speed is at 8x also.

Let us know how you like the game.

Did you tell the peeps at the comp store where you got your memory that it was for a Dell, and what type of memory you had in it?

Try it with just the new stick installed and see what happens. If it still freezes, the stick you bought might not be compatible with your system. If it works OK, then the new stick might not be compatible with your old RAM.

Also, make sure you are installing in the right slots based on the number and type of memory you have...

nevermind.. it is working now... i changed the slots with 256 into an empty one and a 512 into another empty one.. i check memory says 1024

i really hope this memory was worth it.. im going to try warcraft3 call of duty, wolfenstein sof2 and see if there is a diffrence. thanks INK!!!!!! let you know how FC is and how my games run cheers

Inkswitch
06-27-2004, 02:01 PM
Call of Duty should run a lot better, too. You should have way less texture loading and hard drive usage during that game and the others I mentioned.

Let us know! I like to hear that I helped and not hurt.

Good deal.

On a side note....... If you really wanna see how much that extra memory helped, take out that stick and run Far Cry with only 512. hehehe You'll see the difference.
