OK... for those that haven't already discovered this... the online server browser overloaded in the first 24 hours. Many people cannot even create an account and if you can ( as I did) you probably won't get online.
There is, however, a way to get in and look around.
Start "server.bat" in the Soldner/Game/Bin directory to launch your own LAN
Launch "soldnersecretwars.exe" (same directory)
Choose "lan game" from the menu and connect to your own server.
So I did this and I have some general impressions:
With a couple of exceptions, it looks and plays worse than BF42. Iffy lighting, very poor structure design and texturing. Seriously, the "man made" stuff looks like a beginner map made for a game 5 years ago. Sure... it has wavy grass and a couple other small touches but looks ancient by today's standards.
Perspectives are weird and occasionally changed while walking along. The building you spawn in to start... twice the game froze for about 20 seconds then suddenly there is grass growing through the floor of the building... :smirk:
The game mode "conquest" appears to be very much the same as BF 42... in fact, the whole thing feels like a poor BF42 mod. The music sounds like a variation on DC. The games start the same: choose spawn point, you get a map of conquest points in the upper right, etc...
On the whole... possibly one of the largest disappointments I've ever had in a new game.
Mind you, the game is way behind schedule, and supposedly release is within a month. This game, as it stands now, is barely a beta.
EDIT: A few of the bugs I posted in their forums:
Bugs: On Riverside (was that the name?)...
Twice the game froze right after I spawned and after about 20 seconds, there is suddenly grass growing through the floorboards... inside the building.
Perspective... frequently while walking along, my perspective changes on it's own.
Often I click primary fire just once and it won't stop firing.
is it intentional that, while walking, my rifle disappears when in first person perspective?
While swimming, the video is exceedingly grainy.
The map up top, right, frequently goes black with nothing showing.
On occasion, my weapons menu is suddenly empty...
And one stupid little point about file names... in the demo, there are files named Soldner, Soeldner and SĂ–LDNER... how about normalizing that?
I had high hopes based on earlier screen art but, alas, I am sorry to say this is too little, too late.
