I thought this might help with anyone trying to pull NTFS files from a HD while in DOS.
NTFS Reader for DOS (http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm) would be an excellent tool. I found this on Neowin.net (www.neowin.net) (which by the way is back up) and the best part about it is that the file is FREE.
Yes free. Download it if you need it ... heck download it if you think you might need it.

doh.. i thought this worked with fat32 volumes, too. Apparently it cant read from FAT32 volumes. Anyone know of a free, dos based utility (as in, I can run from a windows boot disk) supporting long file names?

Phan, you should be able to make a Windows boot disk (Win95-B or Win98/SE) and it will support FAT32 volumes.
Control Panel->Add Remove Programs->Third Tab at the top (I don't remember what it says). Click create Windows StartUP Disk. You should be able to boot to that to access FAT32 volumes.

I thought long filenames got lost in DOS when copying or moving files when you booted from a diskette.
The result is that you end up with truncated filenames like .. "WHATEVE~1.DOC" when you restart and boot back to Windows (or so I thought).
