View Full Version : More maps on the GA server
Can't we get a few more built in maps up that are DC capable? I know of a bunch more that would be nice for a change (even if they are older maps). It's been a long time since I've played them and they are DC ready. What do other people think?

Yes, there is actually a patch I need to apply... DC .7 introduced a few problems with the non-dc maps. I will see if I can apply the patch and add some original maps before the weekend.

Market Garden was fun. Hope they fixed it too 'cause it was pretty buggy. Some of the Day 2 or Day 3 maps might be nice for a change as well.
While you're tinkering with the server, would you please raise the tickets a bit? They don't need to be as high as they used to be, but some of the maps like Docks, Sea Rigs, and Weapon Bunkers are harder for Coalition with the lower count. It takes that long just to get a foothold sometimes. (Although a lower count on WB isn't bad because the map is over sooner. :))

On the topic of maps, are the custom maps still mixed in or have they been removed? I keep looking at GA's current map in BFM8 but could not find my big monster truck map in any of the times I've checked. Just curious :D
I personally did not like the custom maps in the rotation due to fact that we lost most of the other players in the server every time they came up. Not many players actually have gone and DL'd them and set them up. Many a times a custom map has come up and left a once 1/2 or more filled server to only 3 or 4 die hard GA players and they didn't come back for the rest of the night leaving for one sad end to a good rolling night.
Especially when players surf for occupied server. We have done fair on getting the GA server filled, but it was only due to having some usual players in that brought other gamers in and got the night rolling. Every night that the server "crashes" or an admin changes the map pre player entry, it has killed the night if the die hards are not still playing and bring players back after the crash/player drop.
The custom maps were neat to try, but for normal nightly play they more so emptied the server and killed the rest of the night.

Then obviously they hadn't heard about BFM8. It does it automatically. :D
It may take awhile for the BF custom maps to catch on with the gaming community. I'm sure UT didnt have very many servers running custom maps at first.
I did enjoy the change of scenery, though.

If we could get the average player to use BFM8, then we'd be set for having fresh maps to play.

There were actually very few UT servers that ran custom maps even in UT's heyday. Most used the standard+bonus pack maps or were low-grav IG Face-only servers (bleh).
Custom maps for BF/DC face two big challenges. Phan has solved one with automatic map download. The other one is trickier: BF/DC maps are really hard to create. I eventually figured out UED and made some basic 2boxes type maps (nothing good though because my brother got all the 3D talent in the family), but just reading the tutorial for BF mapping makes me go crosseyed. You need multiple tools and import files back and forth in order to make a single map, and unlike UED, all the tools aren't free. BF:V is supposed to have an updated map editor, but it'll have to be a lot better than the one for BF1942 for custom maps to take off like they did with UT.
I'd call the custom DC maps we tried as decent early efforts but they tended to lean more toward gimmicks than gameplay (i.e. the vehicles in Quarry, the stilt buildings and Taj Mahal static objects in TwinRivers). I still like the idea of running custom maps one night a week or so and promoting BFM8, as long as the map list changes can be automated. Almost anything is scriptable and can be run off a cron job...the hard part would be writing such a script (going crosseyed again :)).

Stealth, so what maps are we looking at? Whether you are changing out the default maps and/or adding custom ones, you should have a list of the current rotation somewhere - much like the days of SDP's Playground. :D
