You know the way your name floats around above your head, and is visible from far off, through walls, etc?
Is that controllable on the server side? Like changing the distance at which it's visible, and whether it's visible from outside buildings and all that? Do you guys think it'd add a level of difficulty to the game, or would it open it up to more noob/smacktard behavior?
I dunno. Just wondering. Discuss. :)

You can adjust the distance or the width of sensing the users name. I have played on servers where the name only comes up if you can see the person and if your crosshairs are right on them.
If your paying attention to your mini-map however, you will never need to question who is friend and who is foe.

I finally got the use of the mini map myself.
If I hear a tank/plane/chopper and do not see one of my color on the mini map then it's an enemy and keep hidden till I can do something about it.
Very handy, almost like a second pair of eyes.

It's not IFF I'm worried about. It's more like the fact that when I'm trying to go covert, I'm spotted from hundreds of yards away, hunkering behind a hill or a building.

The tag isn't visible if your player model is fully blocked from someone's view in a building or behind a wall. However, if you peek out of a window, around a corner, or over a ledge, you're exposing almost half of your body because your "eyes" (POV) are really in your chest. That's usually how covert players give themselves away. It is possible to "sweep" with the crosshair and pick up tags (and is a good tactic in many cases, like looking for snipers in the Lost Village hills or for tanks in the holes on 73 Easting) but in most cases the tag just shows IFF.
There are servers with shorter tag ranges, but the tradeoff is that FF is usually disabled. The DC player models aren't distinct enough in color or shape to determine which side someone is at medium range through the fog. I always check for tag color before shooting at a bump on a hill that shouldn't be there or an enemy vehicle near a contested or recently taken flag. Without them I'd have a lot more accidental TKs than I do already (and the server is set to punish so I'd probably be banned by now :)). Checking the minimap is also a very good idea, but if I had to stop and check for every tank I saw, I'd lose a lot of tank battles by not getting off the first shot.
Cheers,

Ah, the tradeoffs.
And gg, EA, for putting the POV in my chest. :/
