Still haven't purchased BF1942. I'd like to see what all the hype is about.

I see that there are two expansion packs for the game. And also the desert combat mod. I hear desert combat is all the rage. Do I need to purchase any of the expansion packs to play the Desert Combat mod. Are the expansions worth picking up?

Battlefield Deluxe edition(includes Road to Rome) for $43 at gogamer, and I can get the Jewel Case of BF1942 only for $25.

TIA,

fresh

I would not worry too much about the expansion packs.

The Desert Combat mod is a must! Let me know when you get your game, and we can help you get it set up correctly. Also, PM Ink and he can get you set up with TeamSpeak.

I haven't missed the expansion packs as they are not needed to play DC. I usually only like multiplayer games anyway.

Also you can always go back later & buy the expansion packs if it peaks your interest, imo.

The expansion packs are OK, but not nearly as much fun as the mods (which are free).

None of the mods that I know of requre the expansions.

I have played with several interesting mods. Desert combat (http://desertcombat.com/)is the favorite for most of the UP migrants here. It's fun and fast-paced, isn't too hung up on reality, and is the most popular BF1942 Mod by far.

Forgotten hope (http://forgottenhope.bf1942files.com/main.html)is my personal favorite of all the mods, but didn't catch on with the locals (they gave it an hones try though). It's a WWII "reality mod" which translates into deadlier weapons (one shot kills are common, even for armored vehicles) and many more weapons vehicles and maps than come in the basic BF1942. It is on the verge of releasing a major new version

Battlegroup 1942 (http://www.battlegroup42.com/)also adds a lot of cool WWII stuff, but is (a little bit) more arcade-ish than Forgotten Hope.

There are many more, but these three are the best and most complete, of the ones I have seen.

BF1942 rocks!

Salyavin

Yup, the mods are where all the action is. I have the jewel case version from gogamer.com and it's the only thing you need (well, that and the mod downloads). In fact, I've only played the original BF1942 twice and that was offline against bots.

Cheers,

Freshie! I have not seen much irony over here, flying a helicopter may have some, but I can't be sure. Hope to see ya on the battlefield soon! Also- it took me forever to get this game to play right, I'm special though, so you should be ready to go in no time with like 3 downloads.

ok..is there some sort of manual that comes with this (desert combat)? I have no idea how the game modes work (well I have a vague idea of the onslaught one where you camp the flags) and every time I try to fly a copter I just flip over into the water. And when I first started I was TK'ing b/c I couldn't tell who was who (has anyone figured out how to run it in 1280x1024 instead of 1280x960?).

Fear me! :p

Freak.
You can change the resolution in the Options menu. To change the refresh rate:

Open the "VideoDefault.con" file with notepad.
It's located here...
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\Mods\bf1942\Settings"
Change the line that reads "renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0" to "renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1"

That will allow you to use any refresh rate you want.
Are you using a joystick for the heli?

Just join TS when some regs are on it. They will be happy to show you the finer points.

You'll need a joystick to fly- or just be an earthworm like me. ;)

Also, if you bail out from a high flying heli or jet.. make sure you free fall for a bit. If you press 9 (parachute) too early, you will be falling for the entire game.

I found this out last night. :D

We have a couple of n00bs here, perhaps we should hold another training session.

Another thing... walk before you run! Learn how to do the ground stuff, then move on to the aircraft. The chopper, especially, can be a bit challenging to master.

Let us know who is interested in a training session... made all the difference in the world for MM and I when Ink and EH provided us with some training.

Placed order for JC BF1942. And Tron 2.0 for good measure, just because Turkish talked the game up so much.

Should be at my door by wednesday.

You need a joystick to fly the copter?? Will a gamepad be OK??

So I'll install it and give it a spin this evening and download mods and such. I'd sign up for some training later this week, maybe wednesday or thursday.

So I played the Normandy map last night from the Axis side, offline That was pretty fun. Never did make it online however. Servers I attempted to conntect to, kept not accepting my connection. I take it was because I hadn't installed the latest patches of the game yet. Takes awhile to download 100 Megs of Patches.

SoBeiT

There are servers that are not running the newest patches, they like one kind of DC or BF and stick with it.
Can't say what the experience would be to play there though. Every server has it's own rules and allows different styles of play. Many have no game admins on at all.

Playing here would be your best bet and not every night is a great game night. So post and we'll try to be there for you.

On the in-game server browser, some of the servers had a red background and some had a tan background, what does this tell me?

Also, it was apparent to me, which version, mods a server was running from the in-game browser?? Do mod game types show up on the in-game browser??

The BF1942 server browser sucks ass. Worst design ever.

When you go to Multiplayer freshie, look near the upper right corner; to the right of the server listings and there you will see a CUSTOM FILTER menu. Click on the little arrow and it will show all mod types you have installed. Just click on DesertCombat and only servers running that game type will be displayed.

Alternatively, you can create a desktop shortcut that automatically launches BF1942, loads up DesertCombat, and then connects directly to the GA server. It's in this forum somewhere....I'll try to find it for ya.

Any good places to hang out on IRC for BF1942??

Salyavin
01-13-2004, 12:36 PM
To connect directly to the GA server, make a shortcut to BF1942.exe and add this to the Target: +restart 1 +joinServer 66.98.160.70:14567
(+restart 1 skips the opening movies)

A few good resources for newbs:
Official DC forums (http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbattlefield/desertcombat/)
DC FAQ (http://www.planetbattlefield.com/dcfaq/index.html). Has links to guides for tankers, heli pilots, etc.
DC Manual (http://redeye.cnchost.com/dcm/) (slightly out-of-date as it was written for 0.5L).

'R' is the default reload weapon.

'G' grabs new weapons from crates (like VSS or AA).

And, just stand by a crate when the little bullets show up on your screen and your ammo magazines will get refilled.

Just press "R" to reload. You get 4 or 5 clips depending on the weapon. When those run out, you'll need to reload at the ammo stockpiles.

Freshie,

Use BFM8 to keep track of your BF favorites. You can use it to launch the game straight into the server without even having to see the opening movies.

You could alternatively use the "My Servers" button at the top of these forums to keep track of your favorite BF servers. You can click on the IP address to launch into the game. But you need to first run and install BFLaunch, a tool that seamlessly launches BF from any web link that begins with "BF1942://"

Both tools are available on my site and in the GA files section.

Like the first time I not only do I suck at flying the helicopter, I even suck at flying the planes.

Is the "SP Artillery" the Humvee-like vehicle?? I cannot understand how to get in the gunner position either. I'll try pressing the "2" key next time.

It's really hard to drive the anti-aircraft armor piece, cause even when you are point straight, it's hard to figure out that you are. It's fun being the gunner on the Abrams tank.

When you are in a vehicle...there is a little diagram of the vehicle on your screen with 'dots' on the vehicle - the dots are the positions available. Just hit your number keys (1-6) to move positions.

Also, in vehicles with turrets, there is a little diagram showing the vehicle's front with an arrow, in relation to the turret. If you get confused, line up the turret with the arrow, and move forward. If you get the AA on a slight slope, you can hit ground targets as well as one in the sky.

Freshie- I suppose its better to suck at flying a heli than to not be able to fly one at all. The only planes I can fly are in the original 1942 and even then its just target practice for everyone else. Probably be easier to fly with a joystick. I have plug and play issues so I'm land locked anyways. Inkswitch demonstrated last night the domination of good heli flying. Grrrrrr...

Sp artillery is "self-propelled" artillery, which in Desert Combat are two very large turreted vehicles. The both have separate driver(1) and turret/gunner positions (2). The Coalition SP gun has a machine gun position(3) as well.

There are two types of Humvee, IIRC, one with an anti-tank missile mounted and one with a machine gun. In the latest version, I think both weapons are in position 2.

All the vehicles (lans, sea air) work pretty much the same way. Whenever you get into an unfamiliar vehicle, try pressing a few numbers and see where it takes you. Just be careful in aircraft, since you can unintentionally start to take off, depending on how your controls are set up

There are several places you can get Heli lessons / instructions. Try www.desertcombat.com (http://www.desertcombat.com) and check thier forums. All kinds of info there.

Flying is hard only until you get it. Then it's easy from there. Everyone has their method, but i'm a pretty decent heli flyer and i use all keyboard when flying..not even a mouse. It takes a knowledge of helicopters and how they operate. Remember:

Choppers have 4 dimensions. left right up and down..but you also gotta remember the "rotate" move...pushing rotate left and bank left will put you in a pretty bad spin. You must learn to counter "direction" moves with "rotate" moves to keep you aligned right..

Check out the sticky on how to do Artillery. Its actually very simple once you see how it works.

Flying is lots of rudder and small, gentle amounts of bank (unless you trying to avoid AA or another plane). Helos work just like real Helos. Get power to the rotor and lift off, then tip the nose down a bit. Use the rudder to turn and line up your target. Use bank for fast turns. Practice offline and you will get the hang of it. A joystick really helps flying.

W - Increase Colletive (Thrust)

A - Increase Rotor
D - Decrease Rotor

Arrow Up - Cyclic Forward

Alright, I did some practicing last night off-line with the helicopter, and I feel I'm getting somewhat better. I had to fly the copter accross the pond once in the Lost Village map as well, but got shot down as soon as I made it over the pond.

I've referenced the Helicopter Piloting guide at planet battlefield which has been extremely helpful.

I have a question howerer... the guide says that you should be able to to hover by tapping the Increase Collective key. I find that whenever I try doing this, just hovering in place.. my helicopter will start moving forward or backward. I'm assuming that this is because difference in the wait of the helicopter, causes tilt which must be counteracted by adjusting the cyclic??

Turning is still kind of a bitch. I've found using the rotor to try turn, just changes the direction of the copter, but not the direction your moving.. which soons cause disorientation, and then a crashing copter. I have a hard time getting the copter going fast enough to get a good bank turn using the cyclic. Oh well, more practice required.

In the beginning of that map, do not fly directly at the Village.

Try to get outside over the hills...I think that stinger was mine :D you were going kinda slow. The opposition can get a big advantage by holding off Coalition landings as long as possible.

That map was really fun. Yeah I understand flying directly at the town not be such a good idea. However, flying directly at the town beets flying directly at the ground, which I was hoping to avoid, since nobody else on the copter, would take the pilots position.

That was a really fun game, your side won with 2 tickets left I believe.

Try this. RIse up to a high level, the pitch foward as far as you dare without going straight down. You will have increased speed from the "dive" and then you can zoom off.

Sometime when I am at the spawn point map, I'll hit ESC or something else that takes me away from that screen before I'm able to choose a spawn point. When I bring the map back up, I'm unable to choose a spawn point, because none are available on the map.
