Thought i'd share this.
One way of blocking advertisements without having to run a seperate anti-spam program is to update your "HOSTS" file in Windows with an updated, anti-spam, list found at one of the following sites:
http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt
http://everythingisnt.com/hosts.html
For Windows 9x and ME place this file at "C:\Windows\hosts".
For NT, Win2K and XP, use "C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"
You can overwrite the hosts file with the updated versions, providing you have no need for your original hosts settings. Most home, web surfers do not.
..and can overwrite this file.
You can also use this self-installer:
http://everythingisnt.com/NoAdHOSTS.exe
Which will do everything for you, and backs up your hosts file in case you need it.
Personally, i've used this hosts file:
http://remember.mine.nu/getfile.asp?t=nc
Which is the motherload of all known ad servers and offensive sites. Once ive overwrote my hosts file with this one, sites that normally give me spam hell have automatically stopped.
So what does all of this do? Basically, everytime you visit a site that calls for an ad from an ad-server, the ad-server's IP address is routed to yourself. Since no ad can be found, a "Page not found" or similar error will appear. This is much less offensive then some of the advertisements out there. And in some cases, sites cannot display a pop up.
