Left 4 Dead Demo Info
|
|
October 24, 2008 –Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (Steam and Source), today announced a special promotion granting those who pre-order Left 4 Dead early access to the official demo.
Left 4 Dead is the new survival action game from Valve that blends the social entertainment experience of multiplayer games such as Counter-Strike and Team Fortress with the dramatic, narrative experience made popular in single player action game classics such as the Half-Life series of games.
Early access to the demo begins Thursday, November 6 on both the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PC. This pre-order promotion applies to all Steam PC pre-orders and all Xbox 360 and Windows-based PC pre-orders from participating retailers in North America. The demo will feature single player and co-operative modes, supporting 1 to 4 player games.
On November 11 the demo will be made available to all Xbox 360 and PC and gamers, with no obligation to purchase. The demo concludes on November 18, when Left 4 Dead will be made available at retail outlets across North America and worldwide via Steam.
This pre-order promotion is scheduled in concert with the previously announced $10 million consumer launch campaign that spans television, outdoor, print, and online advertising.
“Every time someone plays Left 4 Dead, we witness the most overwhelmingly positive reaction that we’ve seen from any of our games,” said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. “This gives us tremendous confidence in the product and why we’ve taken the game on the road, produced this pre-launch demo, and invested more advertising dollars on the title than any prior release from Valve.”
Playable in single player, co-operative, and multiplayer modes, Left 4 Dead is one of the most anticipated releases of 2008 and winner of numerous pre-launch awards, including Best of E3 from multiple outlets.

OCTOBER 21, SAN FRANCISCO – LucasArts and BioWare™, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced the development of Star Wars®: The Old Republic™, a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game set in the timeframe of the Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ franchise. Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players’ actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.
"Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is the most critically acclaimed Star Wars game in LucasArts history and a preeminent example of our company’s interactive storytelling heritage," said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts. "For a long time, we’ve long wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and we felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in the experience together. We knew that the developer capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare."
"Traditionally, massively multiplayer online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars - combat, exploration and character progression," said Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder and General Manager/CEO of BioWare and General Manager/Vice President of Electronic Arts Inc., "In Star Wars: The Old Republic, we’re fusing BioWare’s heritage of critically-acclaimed storytelling with the amazing pedigree of Lucasfilm and LucasArts, and adding a brand-new fourth pillar to the equation – story. At the same time, we will still deliver all the fun features and activities that fans have come to expect in a AAA massively multiplayer online game. To top it all off, Star Wars: The Old Republic is set in a very exciting, dynamic period in the Star Wars universe."
Added Dr. Greg Zeschuk, Co-Founder and Vice President Development Operations, BioWare and Vice President, Electronic Arts Inc., "Star Wars: The Old Republic is set roughly 300 years after the events of Knights of the Old Republic, a timeframe that is completely unexplored in the lore. BioWare has been able to add to the Star Wars history in developing the game’s story and has created an overarching narrative that players can enjoy, regardless of their play style. Our goal is to offer players an emotionally rewarding experience that combines the traditional elements of MMO gameplay with innovations in story and character development."

Starcraft II A Trilogy
|
|
From Gamespot:
Quote:
ANAHEIM, California. If there was ever any doubt about the success of StarCraft II, its fans blew that out the water today when they just about caved the Convention Centre ceiling in cheering as Blizzard devs Chris Metzen, Rob Pardo, and Dustin Browder took the stage. The three were on deck to chair the StarCraft II Gameplay Panel, a session which trod some familiar storyline footprints and threw a few new elements into the mix.
The panel began by explaining that StarCraft II is attempting to break the mould as both an RTS and as a way of storytelling. To do this the team has introduced new gameplay mechanics to help further establish the lengthily backstories of StarCraft universe characters. Today's session marks the first time Blizzard has spoken publically about the single-player component of the game; one that will see you take on the role of returning character Jim Raynor and take place in familiar locales for those familiar with the events of the first game. We began our adventure following Jim on Mar Sara as he sat alone in a bar drinking. A few moments later new character Tychus Findlay entered, and while much of it was explained beforehand by the panellists, there’s a very obvious moment of both recognition and uncomfortableness when the two interact. The history between the two is a bit sketchy, but when Tychus offers Jim a chance at making some coin by stealing alien artefacts the two manage to come to an arrangement.
It’s here in the bar that we’re told the location itself is part of the storytelling vehicle for StarCraft II. By simply hovering the mouse over and then clicking objects such as notice boards, the jukebox, and a television perched over the corner of the bar we’re given information including a wanted poster of Jim Raynor, a music track, or a live news feed from broadcaster UNN. In the cut-scene following the mission to recover the first of Tychus’ artefacts a news report details a Zerg landing at a nearby mine. It’s here we saw our first live StarCraft II gameplay demonstration by the panel and it consisted of a classic “hold out” mission where you’ll need to stay alive for 20 minutes until reinforcements arrive. Naturally it’s not as easy as it sounds and wave-after-wave of Zerg are slaughtered as you move your troops into nearby bunkers in groups of four. Again in the interest of time we warped ahead to the end of the scenario as still more Zerglings attempted to force their way into the fortified base. Just as all seems lost another new comer, Matt Horner, makes an appearance and pulls you and Tychus to safety. Once aboard you’re again free to roam around clicking at will and in the process unlock information on the current situation, backstory, and through the use of the Star Map explore a flat plan of the available planets with missions you can attempt.
At any time you’ll be offered between two and six missions with objectives to both further the overarching story through victory, or unlock new friendships by lending a hand. One example shown was called Saviour and charged you to answer a distress call from a nearby planet. While you may opt to ignore these side quests, they do provide additional allies and in turn access to new planets which can be explored. The team at Blizzard made it clear on more than one occasion that they’re committed to providing a unique experience for players by letting them choose their own path and branching storyline. They did confirm that each game will feature only a single ending for all players regardless of choices made.
It was at this point that Blizzard announced the news that the game will be split up into three separate products. This means that when StarCraft II ships it will only include the Terran campaign--Wings of Liberty--made up of somewhere between 26 and 30 missions. Zerg: Heart of the Swarm and Protos: Legacy of the Void are planned to follow afterwards, though no information was given as to their estimated time of release. Like Jim Raynor in the Terran campaign, Heart of the Swarm will feature a single identifiable persistent character in Sarah Kerrigan, while Protos will follow Zeratul.

Blizz to raffle off more tickets
|
|
The madness continues...
Quote:
Blizzard Entertainment knew that demand would be great for this year's BlizzCon, the developer's annual meet and greet in Anaheim, CA. As such, the developer expanded its presence at the Anaheim Convention Center from two halls to three. However, even that wasn't enough to satiate the demand of its nearly 11-million-strong fan base, and Blizzard said that tickets for the event had sold out within 24 hours of going on sale earlier this week, Web site snafus and all.
However, for those who were unable to wrest a pass for this year's BlizzCon from the overwhelmed ticket servers, hope has not yet faded. In a post to the developer's site today, Blizzard president Michael Morhaime apologized for the restricted guest list, and said that the company has managed to secure an additional 3,000 slots that will be sold by way of a lottery system.
"On behalf of everyone at Blizzard, I want to apologize for the challenges and frustrations you experienced while trying to purchase BlizzCon tickets on Monday and Tuesday," lamented Morhaime. "Due to these circumstances, we've reevaluated our convention hall space and come up with some solutions that will allow us to offer 3,000 more tickets for sale."
Morhaime noted that the lottery will be available only to those with an active Blizzard account as of 9:00 pm PDT on August 12, and promised that more details will be provided "once our plans are finalized." For those unable to secure tickets or unwilling to pony up the $100 entrance fee, DirectTV will offer a $39.95 package that will broadcast live from this year's BlizzCon, which runs from October 10 to 11.

“We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year,” said Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek. “That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis.”

Luckily, Psycho’s Nanosuit is just as capable and he’s equipped with an even bigger arsenal of fully customizable weapons and new vehicles, giving players access to the tools they need to dominate any situation. Aside from this new, exciting single player campaign, Crysis Warhead will also feature new multiplayer content. Stay tuned for more details this summer.

Duke Footage
|
|
Here is an article blatantly ripped off from Gamespot.
Read it through, and follow the link... First ever DNF gameplay footage!
Quote:
Last December, gamers worldwide got a most unexpected Christmas present--a teaser trailer for Duke Nukem Forever, one of gaming's most notoriously troubled projects. The game, which began development in 1996 before President Bill Clinton was reelected, has undergone several complete overhauls, with the most recent version reportedly using the same id Software engine as Doom 3 and Prey.
Now, six months later, Duke Nukem Forever--which, until December, hadn't been seen in public since an E3 2001 trailer--has surfaced again. The footage came via a curious medium--the debut of a new program, The Jace Hall Show, on online video network Crackle.com. Jace Hall is actually Jason Hall, former head of F.E.A.R. developer Monolith and ex-senior vice president of development and production at Warner Bros.
Now head of his own production company, HD Films, Hall has taken the time to host and produce his own show on Crackle, which is also home to magician Penn Jillette's own video program. For the premiere episode of the The Jace Hall Show, Hall lands quite the booking coup--the first gameplay footage of Duke Nukem Forever to be seen outside its Texan developer, 3D Realms.
Upon arriving at 3D Realms headquarters in suburban Dallas, Hall promptly asks studio founders George Broussard and Scott Miller point blank, "What the **** is taking so long?" After blaming the delays in part on the staff's communal World of Warcraft habit, the pair take the towering Hall into a back room for some hands-on time with DNF.
The footage of DNF did indeed look very Doom-esque, with various acts of violence occurring inside darkened interiors. After watching a man clinging to a chain link fence be impaled, a dual-plasma-pistol-wielding Hall blasted several headcrab-like monsters, a robot sentry, and what looked like a gigantic carnivorous mushroom.
To see the footage of Dukem Nukem Forever, watch the first episode of The Jace Hall Show, which also features a brief interview with Greg Grunberg from TV's Heroes and Alias. (The 3D Realms segment begins approximately 2' 35" in.)

Vivendi/Activision Merge
|
|
From Gamespot:
Quote:
For years, Electronic Arts has been the largest third-party publisher on the planet No longer. Two days after EA's CEO said game-industry mergers were winding down, the biggest such union in history was announced. Today, Vivendi Games and Activision declared they were joining forces in a deal valued at $18.9 billion to create the world's biggest independent game publisher. The new company, called Activision Blizzard, will remain publicly traded on the Nasdaq market in New York under the symbol ATVI.
Under the terms of the deal, French media conglomerate Vivendi SA will contribute the entirety of its Vivendi Games subdivision--worth $8.1 billion--as well as $1.7 billion in cash for a 52 percent controlling stake in Activision Blizzard. Once the deal is approved, Activision Blizzard will offer holders of Activision's 146.7 million shares $27.50 for each share--a 31 percent premium over the 20-day average closing price.
If the union is approved by US regulators, Activision Blizzard's estimated $3.8 billion in annual revenue will eclipse EA, which expects $3.35 to $3.65 billion in net revenue for its 2008 fiscal year. It will also put many marquee game franchises--Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, F.E.A.R., Diablo, StarCraft, Warcraft, and World of Warcraft--under a single roof. It will also give Activision's Guitar Hero franchise direct access to the library of Vivendi's Universal Music Group, the world's largest record label.
Since the deal calls for the melding of Activision and Vivendi management teams, both were publicly pleased. "This alliance is a major strategic step for Vivendi and is another illustration of our drive to extend our presence in the entertainment sector," said Vivendi CEO Jean-Bernard Levy. "By combining Vivendi's games business with Activision, we are creating a worldwide leader in a high-growth industry."
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick also gave the union his blessing. "This is a pivotal event in the continuing transformation of the interactive entertainment industry," he declared. "By combining leaders in mass-market entertainment and subscription-based online games, Activision Blizzard will be the only publisher with leading market positions across all categories of the rapidly growing interactive entertainment software industry and reach the broadest possible audiences."

Today Sierra shed a little more light on its plans for the next 'Ghostbusters' videogame. While we originally reported that Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, and Harold Ramis will be reprising their roles for the game, Ernie Hudson is also on board to voice Winston. Also returning are Annie Potts (who played Janine, the Ghostbusters secretary), Brian Doyle Murray (Bill's brother and the Psychiatrist in "Ghostbusters 2"), and William Atherton (Walter Peck, that jerk from the Environmental Protection Agency).

The game will again take place in New York City and players will assume the role of a new Ghostbusters recruit. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions are being developed by Terminal Reality, makers of 'BloodRayne.' Red Fly Studios, which is also working on 'Mushroom Men,' is building versions for the Wii, PS2, and DS.
"From the moment we green-lit the game, we have certainly seen a lot of passion and commitment coming from Sierra Entertainment and both development teams," said Mark Caplan, VP, Licensing for Sony Pictures Consumer Products. "We believe fans are going to be impressed with the game's ability to deliver a very authentic Ghostbusters experience, as well as its capacity to expand the Ghostbusters universe that they currently know."
'Ghostbusters' is currently scheduled for release next fall
